Wrekin College in Shropshire has appointed the John Cheatle Group to supply school uniforms and school sportswear, with a refurbished school shop on site.

Founded in 1880, the college educates boys and girls from age 11 to 18. With a strong pastoral care ethos, the atmosphere at the school is one of positive endeavour by the 600-plus pupils and associated staff.

Karen Bennett runs the school shop – and also coaches sport at the school. Employed by John Cheatle, she has a unique perspective on Wrekin College life, having had a son educated at the school: “We open Monday to Thursday, 12.30 to 2pm, which coincides with the pupils’ lunch break. This makes trying on and buying uniforms and sportswear, and picking up the other items needed, like exercise books and pens, much easier for pupils and parents alike.”

The school shop – which was refurbished by John Cheatle when it began to supply Wrekin College late last year – is situated near the dining room and tuck shop, so is very handy for pupils, and is securely on-site, too.

Karen said several parents had commented on how the refurbished school shop now ‘looks like a proper shop’, with better facilities including new till technology and the ability to take card payments, as well as changing rooms and more effective stock control. The convenience for parents was a significant factor, too.

Peter Crook of the John Cheatle Group said supplying a college of this stature was a ‘substantial’ project for the company and included the provision of general stationery as well as uniforms and sports kits. This additional function – stationery – has been a traditional part of the college for over 20 years, and pupils have payment cards to enable them to come into the shop for various stationery items. The refurbished shop is able to stock a better selection of clothing and stationery for pupils to choose from.

John Cheatle Group is the UK’s largest supplier of schoolwear to the independent schools sector, working alongside over 1500 schools UK-wide and internationally.
