Chicago -- Low income taxpayers can get free assistance filing their 2010 federal income taxes through the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) being offered from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through April 16, at The John Marshall Law School, 315 S. Plymouth Ct., Chicago.

The IRS-sponsored tax clinic is being staffed by John Marshall student volunteers who fill out the 1040 tax returns for individuals and families. As many as 100 taxpayers, especially those with special needs such as the disabled, the elderly, or non-English speaking populations, are expected to find assistance through VITA. Most can expect a tax refund.

Tax filers need to bring with them their W-2 forms and a driver’s license or other form of identification, as well as social security cards or individual taxpayer identification numbers for all people claimed on tax returns. The IRS filing forms will be available at the VITA program. Tax filing day this year is being moved from the traditional April 15 deadline to Monday, April 18.

The VITA program is being coordinated by Adjunct Professor Robert A. McKenzie of Arnstein & Lehr, and student Ashley Hayes who is completing an LLM degree in tax law. This is the second year John Marshall has been involved in the VITA program. The student participants have taken a required IRS training course to qualify as volunteers.

Persons interested in more information on the VITA program can contact Hayes at aehayes06@gmail.com.
