Historic Decision: The Swedish Government Approves House on the Moon
The Swedish government has now approved that the Moonhouse may be placed on the moon. On September 17, 2024, The Moonhouse AB applied for permission to conduct space activities, and now the decision has been made: The Moonhouse will have its place in space.

On January 15, 2025, the house launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a Falcon 9 rocket. The moon landing is scheduled for early June 2025. Right now, it is traveling through space, approximately 1.1 million kilometers from Earth, safely aboard the Japanese company ispace’s spacecraft RESILIENCE.
- It’s an incredible relief that the permit has finally been granted, even though we knew that the Swedish National Space Agency had recommended the government to say yes, says artist Mikael Genberg.
The Moonhouse is the culmination of a 25-year dream to place a red house with white corners on the moon. The idea was born in 1999 when Mikael Genberg read about Sweden’s plans to build the first European lunar probe. Since then, the project has been driven by passion and voluntary work. Now, the dream is becoming a reality.
The Moonhouse evokes thoughts and emotions in people worldwide. What does it mean to place a home in space? What does it say about our future and our limits? The artwork leaves no one indifferent.
- The Moonhouse is more than a symbol – it is a step toward the future in space, says Sweden’s first astronaut, Professor Christer Fuglesang.

About The Moonhouse Artwork
The Moonhouse will be the first site-specific artwork on the Moon, created at the moment the house is installed on the lunar surface. The Moon has always stimulated human imagination with its cold beauty. The knowledge that a red house with white trim stands in the middle of the "magnificent desolation," as one of the first lunar travelers described it, has the potential to shift human consciousness by reframing Earth's profound insignificance and grandeur. No matter what thoughts and emotions The Moonhouse evokes in each of us, it leaves no one untouched. For more information about the Moonhouse visit: www.themoonhouse.com
