Pressrelease 12th September 2024
Watch Mikael Genberg share The Moonhouse story. (short version)
The Moonhouse is a spectacular story of a 25-year-long artistic ambition with the goal of placing a red house with white trim on the surface of the moon. The long-awaited artwork will soon be in place. The house will be launched to the moon with the Japanese company, ispace’s lunar mission during the winter of 2024.
The idea of placing a house on the moon was sparked in 1999 when Mikael Genberg read an article about Sweden building the first European moon probe. Since then, the launch of the artwork has been preceded by tireless voluntary work and commitment over two and a half decades. The Moonhouse has overcome doubters, technical challenges, and financial crises along the way. Rapid technological advancements in recent years have created new possibilities for realizing the work.
Few are left untouched by the Moonhouse, and over the years, it has inspired many thoughts and minds regarding what the artwork is and what it means to those who have been inspired by it.
- Perhaps the artwork, the first house on the moon, can be a symbol of life's eternal quest to survive and develop; a perspective on existence and an eye towards the earth, says Mikael Genberg
Closing the Circle after 25 Years of Visionary Art
The vision of the Moonhouse has already traveled around the world through Mikael Genberg’s artistry - up in trees, underwater, on top of the Globe arena, to the Great Wall of China, and to the International Space Station, ISS, 400 kilometers above Earth as a companion to Sweden’s first astronaut, Christer Fuglesang. All of this leads to this point: the realization of the Moonhouse through the collaboration with ispace.

- The Moonhouse is a fantastic project, and we are incredibly pleased to be part of finally realizing it. The vision of the artwork merges with our own; to expand our planet and future, and to extend the sphere of human life into space, says Julien-Alexandre Lamamy, CEO of ispace Europe.
Voluntary Efforts Have Given the Moonhouse New Momentum
Over the past three years, around 100 individuals, primarily from the worlds of art, space technology, business, and even sports, have contributed with expertise and resources that have given the Moonhouse momentum needed to propel it toward its lunar destination. As co-creators of an iconic artwork, they form a broad network of creative people on a grand adventure.
- From its inception 25 years ago, the Moonhouse has been an artwork governed by individual imagination, everyone has their own moonhouse. The initiative wants to be a hopeful and collective symbol of what we can achieve together. Or as I usually sum it up: ‘First, we put a house on the moon, then we do something difficult’, says Mikael Genberg.
