Company Helps One of Its Own This Holiday Season
Local Marketing Firm Starts Donation Fund for Employee’s Family
Burr Ridge, Ill. (December 27, 2012) — Though it struck nearly 1,000 miles away, Hurricane Sandy still hit close to home for Burr Ridge-based integrated marketing firm The Mx Group. Kate Fishburne, director of organizational development at the company, grew up on the East Coast and her parents still reside in the small town of Monmouth Beach, N.J.
Monmouth Beach and neighboring towns were especially hard hit by the storm, and Fishburne’s family was no exception. Her parents’ home flooded with water that reached almost five feet deep, destroying virtually everything and rendering the house uninhabitable. Her family, like many others, was faced with the seemingly impossible task to rebuild.
As the holidays approached and Fishburne’s family began to understand the full extent of the damage, The Mx Group, led by founder Andy Mahler, was determined to make a difference for the family — a deeper and more personal impact than a single contribution to the Red Cross or one of the other funds supporting Hurricane Sandy victims. So they established a donation fund and seeded it with the first $5,000 — one company doing what they could to take care of one of their own.
“Many people think that the government comes in and helps in a big way financially after one of these storms,” said Mahler, founder and CEO of The Mx Group. “This really isn’t true. And despite insurance money and some help and assistance from the federal government, a family like Kate’s is left without nearly enough money to regain a semblance of the life they once had. We consider Kate part of our own family, and we want to help in the biggest way we can, which is why we organized this donation fund.”
After the initial Mx contribution, the company also had a successful raffle at its holiday party and raised money through an annual bake sale, both of which raised more than $1,600 for the cause. “To date, we have raised more than $17,000 toward our goal of $50,000. We hope that through the charitable kindness of others this holiday season, we can help raise enough money for Kate’s family to rebuild the home they’ve lived in for the past 34 years,” said Mahler.
