Lighting engineers predict frantic fumbling when the clocks go back

Thatcham, UK, 18 October 2011 – The same thing happens every year: on the last Sunday in October, the phones start ringing at lighting maintenance company Quicklight. It’s only once the clocks go back one hour that many of the UK’s facilities managers, finding themselves in early-evening darkness, decide that it’s probably a good time to replace their lamps.

One customer that now avoids this trap is Howdens Joinery. A few winters ago it became so dark in some warehouse aisles that staff found it difficult to read product labels. This threatened to become a health-and-safety issue, so the kitchen supplier asked Quicklight to begin its regular maintenance visits before the dark nights arrived.

Eddie Kelly, senior project manager at Howdens, said, “When you consider everything that goes into running a business, having a well-lit warehouse might seem like a relatively minor concern. But it makes a huge difference. It’s important that your staff are safe in their workplace, and that they can see clearly enough to fulfil orders. It makes good sense to have maintenance and repair people come in on a regular basis, so that you’re ready for the winter darkness.”

Andy Cole, Quicklight’s managing director, said, “In late October last year we took over a hundred calls from businesses within the space of 24 hours. The number of new enquiries we receive increases significantly compared with earlier in the month. This year we expect exactly the same thing to happen. It always does.”

“We have developed a smartphone app that makes it easier to arrange callouts in a hurry. But still, a surprising number of people do have a tendency to put off having their lights replaced until the last minute – there’s not much we can do about that.”

Quicklight’s lighting maintenance solution is designed for busy facilities managers with many services to look after. The company sends qualified engineers to its customers’ sites, anywhere in the UK, every eight weeks, to change any lamps and fittings that have failed. Quicklight doesn’t force its customers to sign up to contracts and only charges for the parts its engineers install.
