Turtle Back Zoo Celebrates Father’s Day with Animal Education

(June 13, 2013 – West Orange, NJ): Just like families throughout the area, Turtle Back Zoo’s many animal species will be celebrating Father’s Day later this week. The way animal fathers interact with their offspring differs widely according to their species. Some animal dads are more protective of their young, while others delegate the nurturing to the mothers.

Here are some animal dads that really have fascinating fatherly traits:

  • Seahorse fathers actually carry the mother’s eggs for about two months until the babies hatch and leave Dad’s pouch.
  • Red fox fathers provide their families with food every four to six hours until their children have grown and their mate can leave the den to hunt.
  • African penguin parents share the incubation duties for their babies.
  • From the eggs to chicks, father rheas (large, flightless birds similar in appearance to the ostrich) feed and protect their young until they are old enough to survive on their own.
