Libyans Receive Blessing from God's Messenger

On the night Libya's rebels fought for the city of Zawiya, Marshall Vian Summers recorded a prayer, one to be heard by his followers around the world and the Libyan people themselves. As events unfold in Libya, a controversial prayer has been released by a religious leader in the United States. On the night Libya's rebels fought for the city of Zawiya, Marshall Vian Summers recorded a prayer, one to be heard by his followers around the world and the Libyan people themselves. Yet this was hardly just a minister praying for peace in the Middle East. This was something far more unorthodox. And that's because of who Summers is and what he claims to possess.

Marshall Vian Summers is the man behind the "New Message from God," a religious movement with supporters worldwide. From Saudi Arabia to Switzerland, people congregate daily on Summers' website to experience what he claims is "a revelation from God for the protection and advancement of humanity." And while Summers doesn't claim to be Jesus, he does claim to be God's Messenger.

So would a messenger from God pray for the Libyan rebellion? According to Summers' organization, that is exactly what's happened. And this prayer (www.newmessage.org/prayerforlibya), now circulating on the web, comes in three parts. First, "God's messenger" prays for the uprising, second for the Qadaffi regime that opposes it and third for us, the western onlookers.

Summers enjoins Qadaffi and his supporters to "see that you are destroying your own life and the future of your nation." He continues, saying "I pray that your heart will be open to those who risk their lives on the streets of your cities...recognize that their need is your need, their future is your future."

If "God's Messenger" is offering Qadaffi an honorable way out, does that mean God is too? Summers responds saying "Yes, God's forgiveness may be available to Libya's dictatorship. But they must put down their weapons and relinquish power to the uprising. Through the New Message, God teaches that enemies are only friends who have not yet learned to join. This is possible in Libya today."

And yet there's more. According to Summers, God has delivered an actual revelation in response to the crisis in Libya. He says this revelation, entitled "Rebellion, Revolution and War," reveals God's will concerning the freedom struggles now sweeping across the Middle East. Some may wonder why God would speak on Libya's rebellion. Yet with war destabilizing the world, perhaps God's intervention is needed now more than we think.
