The Springfields Academy, the school for children living with complex learning difficulties including autism, yesterday (Thursday) won the SEN Provision Award at the annual Education Business Awards.

The SEN Provision Award, sponsored by Mike Ayres Designs, is awarded to ‘the UK SEN (special education needs) establishment that can demonstrate an increase in the quality of care and education services provided to students with Special Education Needs.’

The Springfields Academy specialises in nurturing its pupils’ education and interests. From this grows self-belief among the children in their capabilities. The Springfields Academy builds on this confidence by providing academic and vocational opportunities for pupils to demonstrate their abilities and allow their peers to share in their belief.

The Springfields Academy is also a specialist sports college, offering high level coaching for gifted children and delivering sport for all.

The SEN Award was presented to The Springfields Academy’s Principal, Trystan Williams, by the television and radio broadcaster, Gavin Esler, at the Education Business Awards ceremony, held at the Emirates Stadium, London on 6 December 2012.

The Springfields Academy is the subject of a half-hour BBC documentary to be aired over the weekend on the BBC News 24 and BBC World News channels. The programme focuses on The Hottest Classroom on Earth, an expedition led by Trystan Williams during which 10 extraordinary SEN pupils from around the UK travelled to Tanzania and trekked with the Maasai tribes people. Also scheduled are a news interview with Williams to be shown on BBC World News today (Friday 7 December) and a 10 minute feature on the BBC Breakfast programme on Sunday morning (9 December).
