Bay Area’s DIYBio community celebrates BioDesign Studio exhibit at The Tech

Creative Collisions: Bio + Hacking event Tuesday, April 12, shows off new bioengineering exhibit at The Tech Museum of Innovation

San Jose, CA. Monday, April 11, 2016 — Members of the Bay Area’s DIY biology community will gather with the public tomorrow night for an event celebrating The Tech Museum of Innovation’s new interactive bioengineering exhibit, BioDesign Studio. The event, Creative Collisions: Bio + Hacking, will give adults an opportunity to explore the exhibit alongside members of the DIY bio movement, who will share some of their latest projects and ways biology is being used as a technology to solve problems.

“We designed BioDesign Studio to enable the public to play with synthetic biology and realize their own power to manipulate biology to do good,” said Romie Littrell, Health and Biotech Project Director at The Tech. “We’re eager to show the exhibit off to members of the DIY bio community and give Creative Collisions guests a chance to see some of the fascinating work being done in labs and homes in the Bay Area.”

At Creative Collisions: Bio + Hacking, we’ll have the following activities and special guests:

• MiraculeX will let you “flavor trip” with miracle berries. It’s a fun and safe experience that makes vinegar taste like juice and lemons like candy.

• Josiah Zayner of The ODIN, who is starting a do-try-this-at-home revolution in the bio-hacker world by creating low-cost, accessible science tools.

• Stanford genetics grad student and science vlogger Alex Dainis will showcase an interactive bacterial painting station.

• Counter Culture Labs will show you what’s brewing in its do-it-ourselves bio-hackerspace.

• Head to The Tech’s BioDesign Studio to get hands-on building bricks with mycelium (mushrooms!).

• San Jose’s TechShop will be 3D-printing bio-hacking tools.

• Van K Duesterberg will show how a cellphone can gain microscopic superpowers.

• Wellesley’s HCI Lab will join us from across the country to demo a prototype for its Martian bacteria activity, BacPack For New Frontiers.

Creative Collisions is an evening series at The Tech founded by the Swanson Family, with thanks to the Koret Foundation. Creative Collisions brings together the makers and shakers of Silicon Valley for a one-of-a-kind experience.

Partners for this event include MiraculeX, Van K. Duesterberg from Manylabs, the Wellesley Human Computer Interaction Lab, The ODIN, The Tech Shop, Stanford at The Tech, MycoWorks and Counter Culture Labs, among others.
