WINE REPORT REINFORCES THAT PINOT NOIRS EXEMPLIFY QUALITY EMERGING FROM CHILE

International Wine Review notes that Chile is gaining momentum in the production of Pinot Noir

May 13, 2011 – Just released, The International Wine Review article titled “The New Pinot Noirs of Chile: An Update,” focuses attention, once again, on Chilean Pinot Noir. The wines featured showcase the continued growth in quality of Pinot Noir that Chile has been achieving for a little over a decade – and will continue to exhibit in the coming years. Explored in the review are over 20 new releases from renowned regions as well as groundbreaking new terroirs within Chile.

A viticultural paradise known for bold Cabernet Sauvignons and exotic Carmeneres, Chile is now earning countless recognitions for its production of Pinot Noir. Since the late 1990s, the country’s winemakers have been hard at work, leading the way in the quest for the holy grail of this varietal by exploring emerging cool climate grape-growing regions, such as Casablanca, San Antonio and Leyda, as well as the more distant regions of Limarí and Bío Bío. As a result of their pioneering spirit, Chile is now producing high-quality and well-rated pinots that range from delicately charming to hauntingly seductive.

“Pinot noir is a difficult grape to grow and cultivate, so many winemakers see it as a challenge to produce a high-quality version of this varietal,” says Fred Dexheimer, Master Sommelier. “Chile has many regions throughout the country that have perfect conditions to allow this varietal to thrive.”

While Chile offers many pinots worth note, The International Wine Review mentions Amayna, Casa Marin, Chilcas, Cono Sur, Errazuriz, Kingston Family Vineyards, Matetic, Montes, Quintay, Tabalí, Undurraga T.H. and Veranda as wineries that are currently producing standout Pinot Noirs. “With the induction of new clones, improvements in vineyard management, and advances in winemaking techniques, we expect to see more wines of this character in the coming years,” say the editors of I-Wine Review.

With Pinot Noir in the spotlight, Wines of Chile also recently hosted their 5th Online Blogger Tasting: Cool Climate Reds, featuring four Pinot Noirs and four Syrahs from Casablanca, Limarí, Leyda and Colchagua. In attendance for the highly anticipated event moderated by Fred Dexheimer were 50 bloggers from around the United States and eight winemakers from Chile.
