Muriel Seltman urges sceptics to design their own God free of religion

In her latest book, Rescuing God From Religion, author Muriel Seltman encourages individuals to construct their own idea of God to provide comfort and consolation.

God-concepts have existed throughout history. There have been many committed believers and perhaps fewer, but equally committed, non-believers. This book is written by a nontheist for people who waver in their belief in a ‘creator-God’. Perhaps they feel that there must be ‘something out there’ but are dubious about the religious doctrines into which they were born.

They may feel the need for the emotional or intellectual security given by the idea of a personal, loving God. And it may be hard for such individuals to question, look for evidence and, finally, to reject what the community into which they were born and in which they grew up, accepts as the natural state of things. They will have joined the dreaded ‘Other’, the bearer of every possible evil characteristic in contrast with the virtues of the believers.

Within this context questions are discussed such as: Why does religion exist? Why is it successful? Why are we here? Are we significant? When are symbols idolatrous? When is it legitimate to use them?

Copies of Muriel's enlightening book, Rescuing God From Religon, are available upon request from Matador.
