In Never Trust Professors, all is not well at the fictional University of Blackchester – their reputation is becoming increasingly sullied, riddled with scandals and damaging rivalry..

I thought you might be interested in hearing about the latest novel from Donald Read, who has previously published two novels set at the fictitious 'University of Blackchester' – All You Need Is Love and Clever By Half.

In his latest, Never Trust Professors, there is a damaging rivalry between the Professors of History and English, not least about how to increase their student numbers. Too many female students are involved in love affairs – not just with their fellow students but with their teachers and even with married lecturers. The faintest whiff of sexual misbehaviour on campus always finds the press howling for academic blood.

One of Blackchester’s sexual scandals in particular features in all the headlines. And of course these muckraking stories are read every morning by anxious parents. Who can they trust? ‘Never Trust Professors’, say the newspapers, spurred on especially by the Daily Express, which has a reporter on campus.

This is the third of Donald Read’s insider novels about university life in the third quarter of the twentieth century. He has had extensive inspiration for his novels; as an alumni of University College, Oxford; a historian at the University of Kent; and after a research scholarship at the University of Hull, starting in the same year as Philip Larkin's appointment as a librarian there. Donald later became company historian at Reuters news agency and wrote its authorised history: The Power of News (OUP). He was national President of the Historical Association (1985-88) and is a regular contributor to the HA’s quarterly journal, The Historian

Donald is available for interview, and copies of his latest satritical novel Never Trust Professors are available for review.
