Fiona Barker’s first children’s book, Amelie and the Great Outdoors, encourages children to consider activities outside the home where they can engage with the real world and friends outside.

“As the popularity of screen-based activities is growing, my book is about the importance of balance,” explains Fiona. “I’d like to encourage readers to spend more time outside!”

Amelie is a little girl who never goes outside. She’s happy to stay indoors and play on her own, and is even a little intimidated by the thought of the GREAT OUTDOORS. Her parents have just about given up on trying to convince Amelie to go outside. Not even the thought of trips to the park, the beach, or enjoying ice cream in the sunshine, is enough to make her want to leave her house. But to everyone’s surprise, all that changes when she meets a special friend who helps her realise that it really is the GREAT outdoors after all!

Fiona’s inspiration for writing her book comes from her daughter. “When she was little, she used to hate touching grass,” she explains. “I actually made this story up to keep her quiet one day, but it had the right effect – now she loves to play outside!”
