The Decline of the Scottish Conservative Party

Edinburgh alumni and resident Colin Sutherland anaylses the last 150 years of Scottish politics

This is a fascinating, up-to-date, and well-researched explanation of Scottish politics covering the last 150 years. Sutherland concentrates on the decline of the Scottish Unionist Association following its takeover by the English Conservative Party in 1959-60.

“Some years ago an old friend from university remarked to me that when he first came to Scotland it was a Conservative country, and now it was not; and he asked me how this could have happened. I could not answer, and when I thought about it I was surprised at how little I knew. So I decided to find out," comments Colin.

His educational analysis provides an insight into the changing political landscape. In contrast, his assessment of the individuals involved gives a clear and detailed picture of events. This educational analysis is suitable for anyone interested in Anglo-Scottish politics. Colin provides a detailed yet easy to understand assessment, suitable for both those new to and educated in this subject.

Colin Sutherland was born in Edinburgh in 1940. He was educated in Greemock and Forres. He then went on to study at the Edinburgh University Veterinary School. He worked all his life in general practice, initially in Lincolnshite, and then in the Scottish Borders, with a two-year gap spent in County Clare, Ireand. He is now retired. Review copies of the book, along with more information, are available from The Book Guild.
