Harold’s Story is a fast-paced, vivid, and true-to-life account of the life of Harold Marsh, spanning from life in the inter-war years, through the chaotic Second World War, to the dazed aftermath where Harold tried to rebuild his life with a family back in England.

After unearthing a collection of old audio tapes from her cousin, Daphne Davison brings us the true and gripping account of his life as an RAF pilot in the Second World War.

Daphne found a collection of old audio tapes that her cousin Harold left so that his grandchildren could know the part that he played in the Second World War. “Harold didn’t like talking about his time spent fighting in the War – just like most other people caught up in it. So we had no idea of just what he had faced until I started listening to the tapes. Straight away I realised that his story deserved to be told,” she comments, having spent years transcribing the tapes. “This is told in his own voice. I have added nothing.”

The book gives full and descriptive accounts of World War Two life in vastly different locations such as the Shetland Islands, France, India, and Sumatra. The conditions ranged from freezing billets in northern Scotland to jungle hunts in the tropics, from sleeping on tables to luxury in India. Including a nail-biting account of the last moments before the Japanese claimed Singapore, this book is an intimate and personal memoir of the tense and unbelievable War years.

Daphne Davison was born in Whitstable, Kent, in 1936. Shortly afterwards, her family moved to Canterbury, where they endured the war and the bombing. Daphne attended a school for ‘mixed infants’ prior to winning a scholarship to the Simon Langton Grammar School for Girls in Canterbury. She married her second husband Alan in December 1993. Daphne is currently available for interview, and review copies of Harold's Story are available on request.
