PROFILE, a novel by Riley James, is set in the 1980’s in South Florida, when illicit drugs fueled everything from stiletto boats to turbo-powered law careers.

New York, April 20  --- The roots of racial profiling run deep in South Florida, as recent events tragically reveal. Profile, a gripping new legal thriller by Riley James, released on TheWriteDeal this week, paints a wrenching picture of just how far our own government will go in profiling citizens.  The novel is born from the author's own experience as a young criminal lawyer in Florida during the1980s drug war.

In a short op-ed on TheWriteDeal’s website, www.thewritedeal.org, author Riley James writes that the concept of “profiling” in law enforcement in the United States began with the drug war. As the war raged, border patrol and police detectives quickly adopted profiling in their work against powerful Colombian and other drug cartels, using drug courier profiles to interdict citizens with the possibility that contraband drugs might be found. Although “profiling“ can be a valid law enforcement tool,” James says, “it is high time to take a deep breath. Our freedoms, and in the case of young Trayvon Martin, our lives, are at stake.”

Riley James’ novel, Profile, is set in the 1980’s in South Florida, when illicit drugs fueled everything from stiletto boats to turbo-powered law careers. Michael Sharp, a gifted black attorney, is at the top of his game. Living in a house his parents could only have dreamed of, with a stunning wife and precocious young daughter, Michael skillfully maneuvers a complex sphere of political power and high-level drug smugglers, earning a reputation as a top notch criminal defense attorney. Caught in the eye of the storm of the U.S. government’s attack on drugs, he navigates his personal temptations with seeming ease. But Michael Sharp's star ultimately burns too bright, and he learns just how many enemies he’s made, and how powerful they really are. When the scales of justice finally turn against him, Michael begins to self-destruct. Will the family he loves more than anything become one more of the drug war's casualties?
