Umeå Municipality is investing in a learning portal and standardised IT support from Tieto to minimise the time teachers spend on educational administration and increase the parents' knowledge of children's school work.

“The teachers will have more time for their students, the students will have a clearer structure, and the parents will find it easier to follow the children's work,” says Gunilla Yourstone, IT strategist at Umeå Municipality.

The learning portal, edWise, is an educational support tool for planning, implementation, evaluation and learning online. The solution involves approximately 5,000 school staff, 15,000 students and 20,000 parents. The contract is for SEK 4.4 million over four years, with an option to extend it twice for 2 years.

The portal is platform-independent and can be connected to various systems. Installation began in May and the portal replaces a variety of IT solutions for registering attendance and documentation from four different suppliers. The proportion of students who can work in the portal is being increased. It originally only covered upper secondary school students but now covers everyone from preschool to mature students.

“During the procurement process, a lot of time was spent on the requirements, and the four suppliers had to present their solutions. A comprehensive user test was carried out with teachers, preschool teachers and parents, which produced results. The assessment group gave the edWise learning portal the highest marks,” says Gunilla Yourstone.

The learning portal is currently used in around 50 municipalities throughout Sweden. Umeå already has Tieto’s administrative tool for school administration, Procapita.

“We are pleased about the extended business relations and that Umeå, a large municipality and an IT pioneer, has confirmed the strength of our solution,” says David Hübinette, Business Manager at Tieto.
