Tieto the first IT-company in the world to receive the international EDGE gender equality certification

Tieto Sweden is the first IT company in the world to receive the gender equality certification from the Swiss EDGE Certified Foundation. The certification is the leading global assessment methodology and business certification standard for gender equality, and it assesses policies, practices and numbers across five different areas of analysis: equal pay for equivalent work, recruitment and promotion, leadership development training and mentoring, flexible working and company culture.

- We are proud of the dedicated work towards gender equality that we are doing at Tieto. In the end, it’s about our business – our employees are our most valuable asset and neither we, nor the industry, can afford to risk leaving half of the recruitment base behind. The certification is a step in ensuring that we utilize the best competence available and become more competitive, says Per Johanson, Country Manager Sweden at Tieto.

- Tieto Sweden’s positive approach and genuine desire to make change happen was impressive from the beginning. The company is crafting the infrastructure to enable workplace gender equality with the potential for sustainable business impact. Moving forward, Tieto Sweden recognizes and nurtures gender equality as a strategic imperative, which will set the company apart, as a leading organization within the IT industry, says Maria Oldin, Managing Director EDGE.

Tieto has reached the first degree of EDGE certification, which means that the company has made a thorough analysis, developed an action plan and started to implement it. In recent years, Tieto has worked hard to build awareness on the positive effects of gender equality, for example through partnerships and collaborations with schools. Several activities have also been initiated to attract and recruit more women to the company. Looking ahead, the company also intends to set up a diversity council with members of the top management. Certification is valid for two years and requires continuous effort. If the company does not reach the next level within six years they lose the certification.

- This is the start of a long-term effort. The industry is developing at a rapid pace and to be competitive we must be able to come up with the best ideas. And to do that you need a wide mix of people with different perspectives. Gender equality is an important piece of the diversity work that should be carried out close to the business to get real impact and to attract the best talent, says Tina Männik Almqvist, Head of Employer Branding & Diversity at Tieto.

About EDGE Certification
EDGE is the leading global assessment methodology and business certification standard for gender equality. The EDGE assessment methodology was developed by the EDGE Certified Foundation and launched at the World Economic Forum in 2011. EDGE Certification has been designed to help companies not only create an optimal workplace for women and men, but also benefit from it. EDGE stands for Economic Dividends for Gender Equality and is distinguished by its rigor and focus on business impact. The methodology uses a business, rather than theoretical approach that incorporates benchmarking, metrics and accountability into the process. It assesses policies, practices and numbers across five different areas of analysis: equal pay for equivalent work, recruitment and promotion, leadership development training and mentoring, flexible working and company culture. EDGE Certification has received the endorsement of business, government and academic leaders from around the world.
