Espoo chose TietoEnator as partner with overall responsibility for its e- service project The city of Espoo becomes one of the forerunners in the development of electronic services for citizens: The city of Espoo and TietoEnator Corporation have today signed a partnership agreement according to which Espoo and TietoEnator will together develop the city's e-services. TietoEnator will be responsible for the overall delivery of the production system and its basic solutions, the implementation of e-services, and the necessary operating services. The project can be regarded as significant even at Northern European level due to its exceptional, integrated approach. The development of the city's e-services is based on an information society and web service strategy, and it will result in e-services for the inhabitants, companies, elected officials and employees of the city. The aim of the city of Espoo is to offer citizens better access to the services offered by different sectors of the city through an open information network. The city also aims at improving the availability and quality of the services through 24-hour web services and at increasing the interaction between the citizens and authorities in the development of services and the city environment. E-services introduced during the first phase are, e.g. the city's news and release archives, service indexes, discussion forums, and event calendars, which the citizens can access though the Internet. The citizens will also be able to use the web pages for open jobs, corporate web services, and different form-based services. As the project advances, for example interactive planning and map-based services will be developed. Part of the implementation of the city's information society strategy The now introduced web service project is part of the implementation of the city's information society strategy. The inhabitants of Espoo are highly educated, and already more than 60% of the over 200 000 inhabitants use the Internet daily either at home or at work. - For Espoo the development project of electronic services is strategically very significant. Among the reasons for choosing TietoEnator as partner were the company's expertise in e-service projects for the public administration and its Scandinavian references from local administrations as developer of web services, says Ms Marketta Kokkonen, the City Mayor. - Espoo is one of the centres of Finnish technology expertise and the emerging information society.
