TietoEnator and esmertec, inc. in alliance TietoEnator and esmertec, inc. have entered an alliance concerning the Java based real-time operating system, Jbed@. esmertec develops and markets Jbed the embedded realtime Java Virtual Machine - and Jbed Micro Edition CLDC - the fastest JVM for PDAs, Internet appliances and mobile phones. TietoEnator specializes in Java and real-time consulting. Both companies intend to expand their businesses within the segment. esmertec needs a partner with competence in system integration and experience in providing solutions to the Scandinavian industry. TietoEnator will deliver qualified engineering resources and technical consulting experience and know-how concerning major customers in fields such as telecommunications. TietoEnator provides consultants services and expertise and have many years' experience of how to combine modern object-oriented practices with the special requirements of technical systems - called Realtime Object Technology. Object-oriented analysis and design using modern tools and an incremental process combined with a real-time operating system and languages like C++ and Java, results in shorter development time and a robust, modular system architecture. Pure JavaTM based RTOS for Embedded Systems The Next Generation Embedded and Real-time Operating System Jbed Real-time Operating System (RTOS) is the only RTOS with a kernel designed for embedded Java. As a result, Jbed is exceptionally small and fast. This makes it particularly cost-effective for high-volume applications, e.g. car systems or mobile phones. Unlike older products, Jbed needs no separate virtual machine - the kernel is the virtual machine. Byte code is translated into fast machine code prior to EPROM-burning, or upon class loading. This avoids the speed and size penalty of a full virtual machine, yet still allows using the advanced features of Java: dynamic code loading and automatic garbage collection. This unique approach leads to exceptional Java performance: roughly an order of magnitude faster than comparable products. Jbed@ is the first pure Java embedded real-time Java Virtual Machine (JVM)/RTOS and enables Java to dynamically load new modules as needed. With the target bytecode compiler (TBCC), the complete application (including Jbed) fits in 1 Mb of RAM and ROM. Without support for dynamic loading, memory requirements can be halved.
