TietoEnator's Partnership Forum's theme is the future of the welfare society TietoEnator's Partnership Forum will gather nearly one thousand public administration and healthcare specialists from around Finland in Tampere Hall on 5-6 September to discuss the future of the welfare society and the role of information technology in the production of services. Several examples of the possibilities offered by information technology will be presented at the Partnership Forum's seminars, short lectures, exhibition stands and sessions in different fields. In his opening speech, Managing Director Matti Lehti introduced one of TietoEnator's latest development projects, Finnish speech recognition that is to be integrated in the healthcare services' Effica product family. The development project will be carried out in cooperation with Philips Oy and Konttorityö Oy. This kind of a speech recognition system that covers the entire basic healthcare sector has never been implemented anywhere in the world. The Forum's exhibition also presents the new SMS services included in the electronic healthcare services that enable, for instance, inquiries of laboratory test results by SMS. Another novelty is the integration of fuzzy-logic text recognition, i.e. error correction, in the PallasPro library system's search functions. The program automatically corrects the library user's typing errors, for instance, when retrieving information from the Internet. In his speech at the main seminar, Tuomas Sukselainen, Director General of the Budget Department of the Finnish Ministry of Finance, emphasized the importance of steady economic growth for the maintenance of the welfare society. "In Finland, the public administration's responsibilities for organizing services and pensions are bigger than average within the EU. The promises stated in our laws can only be fulfilled if their financing lies on solid ground and the public economy functions efficiently. We aim at improving the quality of our public services but at the same time reducing the costs thereof," Sukselainen stated.
