TietoEnator to implement the Digiroad data system for the Finnish Road Administration TietoEnator Oyj has signed an agreement with Finnra, the Finnish Road Administration, on designing and implementing the Digiroad data system. The data system is part of a project with the objective of creating a single register covering the entire road and street network of Finland to form the basis for telematic traffic services. The register will be at the disposal of service providers as they develop their services and provide them for businesses, the public sector and individual motorists. The development work is based on the results of the definition project implemented by TietoEnator last year. The database of Digiroad will be completed by the autumn of 2003. The basic register will contain the data on the geometry of roads in Finland and data on particular features such as limitations of use, one-way roads and streets, no turning -signs, weight and speed limits, as well as information of major stops on the roads. In the future, information provided by Digiroad can be utilised for various purposes such as route planning and development of public transport. Development work for the services based on the Digiroad database will start while the system itself is still being built. The information provided by Digiroad, when combined with satellite-based positioning systems, mobile telephone networks and on-board computers in vehicles, will offer the service providers with extensive opportunities for developing their services.
