Hungary’s largest bank replaces previous card acquiring solution with next-generation technology to support international expansion.

BUDAPEST 11 JANUARY 2023. OTP Bank Hungary, the country’s largest bank with operations in more than ten countries, has completed its migration to Tietoevry’s Card Suite, which is now deployed in Hungary. This successful implementation is already delivering faster time to market for new acquiring and merchant management products as well as a single unified platform for card services across the bank that can support OTP’s rapidly growing transaction volumes in its card business.

The reason for the development was that OTP Bank faced several challenges due to the operation of its previous systems, that’s why the bank was looking for a partner that went beyond technical excellence to demonstrate an innovative approach to customer needs in both acquiring and issuing. Following an extensive tender process, Tietoevry Card Suite solution was selected for its flexibility and capacity to function in multiple configurations – factors that fit with OTP Group’s ongoing strategy.

To meet the needs of OTP Bank products and workflows, Tietoevry Card Suite was configured and integrated with a broad spectrum of OTPs other systems, including settlement automation workflows, reporting automation, business process automation and others. This was managed seamlessly during installation and migration. Tietoevry then delivered an iterative road-map for implementation, including staff training and a structured pathway for roll-out. Following launch, Tietoevry has retained ongoing responsibility for back-office merchant management and acquiring platform maintenance, as well as keeping OTP’s Card Suite solution compliant with the latest international card schemes regulatory requirements. In addition, the platform gives the possibility for OTP Bank to easier meet the needs of the national – Hungary’s Central Bank – and international – such as the EU – regulatory environment in the future too easier.

Valdis Janovs, Head of Instant Retail Payments and Cards, at Tietoevry Banking said: “Adopting a structured roll-out to this implementation ensured zero system downtime and enabled more agile working, including faster testing and client feedback, as well as the capacity to change requirements during the delivery process. Following successful deployment, OTP Bank is witnessing a reduction in maintenance and operating costs, while enjoying the capacity to test and launch new acquiring products faster than was previously possible. Regulatory updates are now handled directly in the system, and end customers are getting better service – which will build their loyalty to OTP’s brand and could improve revenues across the group.”

Commenting on the successful implementation, Péter Csányi, Deputy CEO of OTP Bank, said: "The development of the bank card settlement system created an opportunity for us to provide faster and more convenient service to our partners. With the new system – which has been in operation since September 2022 – we offer more competitive, modern and even customized services to our bank card accepting partners."
