New Swedish IP telephony operator Megaphone chooses Tilgin as Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) provider for their broadband based IP telephony services, to be offered through home electronic stores all over the country. The customers will buy the Tilgin residential gateway, offered with optional wireless handsets, over the counter. After the purchase and plug-and-play installation, Megaphone offers same-as-PSTN quality telephony over any broadband connection at an extremely low cost.

Tilgin residential gateways offer the consumers such functionality as Internet access, built-in firewall, dual phone connections, support for local Ethernet LAN and more. The telephony service behind the CPE is provided by leading Nordic operator TDC Song.

“IP- and broadband telephony is hotter than ever, but most potential customers are deterred by computer based IP telephony solutions such as Skype and Parlino. People simply don’t want to sit hooked up to their computers by a headset. Our solution takes the geek out of the solution and makes broadband telephony and pricing available to everyone with a normal phone,” says Anders Bärring at Megaphone.

No hassle solution
The Megaphone solution has been launched in selected retail shops and will be rolled out in Siba and OnOff outlets. After purchasing the Tilgin residential gateway in the store, the customer goes home and connects the gateway to an existing broadband modem or router. The automatic installation takes care of the technical details of provisioning the equipment and the telephony service. All the customer then has to do is connect their existing wired or DECT telephone to the gateway and begin making calls.

“We chose Tilgin for several reasons. Functionality, track record and local presence were all important factors. But most important was the manageability of the Tilgin solution. The automated plug-and-play and remote access administration utilities gives us the cutting edge needed to deliver the lowest cost telephony solution and still make a profit,” says Mathias Andersson, director of sales at Megaphone.

The Vood 322
Designed to connect to an existing broadband modem, the Vood 300 series meets the challenges of providing carrier-grade VoIP when broadband connectivity is separately provided. All provisioning and management can be performed via the centralized Vood Centre Manager. The Vood 322 is a one product VoIP solution that provides trouble-free NAT traversal for VoIP calls. Auto-provisioning and single IP address handling keeps installations simple and essentially eliminates the need for helpdesk support.

“Megaphone’s choice to go with Tilgin as a provider of the CPE confirms that our technology and functionality corresponds to market needs. The interest in the next generation broadband telephony services is substantial. With Megaphone’s over-the-counter distribution model, pretty much like mobile phones are sold today, new consumers who haven’t been tempted by the computer-based services will now make the move to IP,” says Lars Franzén, Sales Director at Tilgin.
