March 4 2008, CeBIT, Hanover, Germany: Tilgin, a leading provider of customer premises equipment (CPE) for multi-play and next-generation broadband services, today announced the launch of a new portfolio of telco Home Gateways designed to help providers service-connect the home.

Telecom operators are experiencing increasing needs to deploy a new type of broadband home gateway that can function as a service delivery node capable of servicing a broader portfolio of consumer applications. Meeting this need, Tilgin has engineered and is now launching a new portfolio of operator managed Telco home gateways that allow operators to service-connect the home. Designed for advanced service delivery, the Tilgin Home Gateways provide the powerful and intelligent functionality needed by operators to deliver a broad portfolio of existing and next-generation services to broadband consumers.

Three new Tilgin Home Gateways are being announced as commercially available. They are the Tilgin HG1110 for ADSL2+ networks, the HG1310 for Ethernet connectivity, and the HG1520 for point-to-point FTTH networks. The products are delivered with the most comprehensive and powerful embedded software yet offered by Tilgin, and as a consequence, the products are equipped with higher processing power and more memory to serve not only today’s requirements but also those of tomorrow. By focusing on greater service functionality and delivery, the new Tilgin Home Gateways enable operators to deliver more and better services – faster, cheaper and with a longer lifecycle.

Regardless of access form, all the Tilgin Home Gateways are equipped with a complete range of wireless and fixed LAN connectivity, which together with support for UPnP, allows operators to service a growing number of connected consumer devices in the home. All products include support for TR-069 remote management, Voice over IP for analog and ISDN telephones, along with integrated wideband codecs that deliver high definition crystal-clear voice that is much better than over the PSTN. Wireless LAN set-up is made both secure and easy with push-button activated Wi-Fi Protected Setup™, while WMM and 802.11e deliver Quality of Service (QoS) features and multimedia support to 802.11b/g functionality. The intelligent service node – a key broadband service-enabler for Telcos
Operators have been weary for some time of just providing a bit-pipe into the homes of their broadband customers. Delivering IPTV and quadplay services have been a way around this. One of the absolute key components that enable operators to deliver these and other differentiating broadband services is the home gateway, and the reason for leading European Telcos to form the Home Gateway Initiative (HGI) as a forum for specifying their requirements in home gateways. The new Tilgin Home Gateways are engineered in accordance with the latest HGI specifications and are deployed into broadband connected homes as fully managed intelligent service nodes for the operator. Delivering much more than connectivity alone, the value the new Tilgin Home Gateways has for operators is increasingly determined by the products’ embedded software and management capabilities.

Ola Berglund, Tilgin CEO, comments: “We are announcing a new portfolio of Tilgin Home Gateways that represent a significant milestone for the company. These products provide a combined hardware/software platform that helps operators roll-out existing broadband services of better quality, while also enabling them to expand and differentiate their service offerings.

Convergence was fundamental to the design of these products. Our objective has been to help operators fully leverage the value of their broadband networks, enabling new service capabilities that engage voice, video and data as service elements and not just as individual services. And with new service capabilities no further than a software upgrade away, we are able to help operators extend the lifetime of their investments to years, instead of just months.”

Fully routed functionality – saves costs and increases service capabilities
Telcos are ramping up to deploy video services that engage multiple set-top boxes as IPTV deployments move to MPEG-4 AVC. At the same time, consumers are showing more interest in networking and servicing consumer electronic devices that are increasingly supporting DLNA / UPnP. New Tilgin engineered routing functionality enables the new Tilgin Home Gateways to flexibly and efficiently route services to and between multiple set-tops. With support for QoS and wire-speed routing, it also allows for standards based service delivery between DLNA connected consumer devices, e.g. Network Attached Storage (NAS), DVR, Media servers, IP radio, cameras, etc. The benefit for the operator is both more functionality as well as facilitating low-cost service delivery routing models over both wide area and local area networks.
