According to the North American Decking and Railing Association (NADRA), more than 40 million decks in the U.S. are at least 20 years old. As temperatures rise and deck season approaches, many people will plan deck parties for the summer season but before sending invitations, it’s important to ensure the deck is safe for use. Snow, ice and heavy rains during winter months can weaken the structure of a deck, making it important to test for safety before hosting any gatherings.

While alternative decking materials, like composite and PVC products, are made to last for 25 years or more, they should still be inspected. Going through this process is even more critical for aging decks that might have been built before regional safety code requirements were mandated as well as for wood decks that tend wear more quickly.

Perform an Initial Inspection

As a first step, homeowners should consult a safety checklist, like that provided by NADRA, to gain an understanding of the signs of an unsafe deck. By checking key areas of the deck such as stairs, fasteners and railings, and looking for visible signs of instability such as cracked boards on the substructure of the deck, owners can get an initial feel for how safe their deck really is.

Seek the Opinion of a Professional

Some of the most common deck faults are due to failure of substructure connection points such as ledger connections, flashing and stringers. For this reason, homeowners should seek the help of a licensed professional who is familiar with these issues. This becomes even more important for homeowners who may have purchased a house with an existing deck who may not know who built the deck.

Maintain the Deck

Even low-maintenance decks, like those from TimberTech, require a bit of upkeep each year. To keep your outdoor space looking pristine and performing its best, periodic cleaning is recommended. Along with a spring safety check, decks should be kept clear of debris throughout the year.

No matter the type or age of a deck, safety precautions should be taken each year before periods of heavy use. By following the three steps above, homeowners can be assured that their outdoor living space is a safe haven for guests and family members to enjoy.
