Tobii, the world leader in eye tracking and pioneer in attention computing, and Automotive Motion Lab, a joint initiative by Stellantis and Aix-Marseille Université, are collaborating to evaluate driver drowsiness from several physiological measurements and seat data. The initiative is another testament to Tobii´s commitment to making roads safer with innovative technology.

Today, the driver monitoring systems (DMS) on the market are primarily built on camera-based analysis of the driver’s face and eyes and/or driving behavior, such as lane deviation or steering behavior. Tobii and Automotive Motion Lab now aim to go beyond these methods, complementing with data collection from the seat, and physiological measurements, making DMS more reliable.

“With this project, Automotive Motion Lab and Tobii hope to push the technological development of the automotive industry forward and use innovative technology to make the roads safer,” said Gunnar Troili, SVP Engineering, Tobii. “This is another proof point of our leading drowsiness detection capabilities and how attention computing can be used to uplevel and improve insights about a person’s physical or cognitive state.”

“Automotive Motion Lab leverages Tobii’s expertise to further investigate the detection of drowsiness at the wheels, without camera vision. This will allow to anticipate future use cases with the emergence of autonomous functions”, said Dr. Jean-Louis Vercher, Ph.D., CNRS and AMU, Automotive Motion Lab scientific director.

“With this collaboration, Automotive Motion Lab wants to improve knowledge on driver’s state and provide recommendations on the possible behaviors in next generation vehicles” said Dr. Clément Bougard, Ph.D., Stellantis, Automotive Motion Lab industrial manager.
