Tokmanni brings its low prices to Kirkonkylä in Nurmijärvi – A multifaceted store with a comprehensive product selection and a solar power plant producing zero-emission electricity
Tokmanni Press release 22 August 2022 at 4:45 p.m.
Tokmanni, Finland’s largest variety discount retailer, is opening a store in Kirkonkylä in Nurmijärvi on Thursday 25 August 2022 at 8 am. The store will have an extensive selection with low prices. Its opening will be celebrated with plenty of special offers and surprise buckets filled with product gifts.
The new Tokmanni store will be opened in a key business location in Kirkonkylä area in Nurmijärvi, in the immediate vicinity of the public healthcare centre. After the opening, Tokmanni will have two stores in Nurmijärvi: one in Kirkonkylä and one in Klaukkala, Nurmijärvi’s largest urban centre, where Tokmanni has served customers for a long time.
The store building in Kirkonkylä is brand new. Combined with the key location, this provides Tokmanni with an excellent opportunity to offer customers its diverse and extensive product selection, from beauty, health and wellbeing, interior decoration, cleaning, clothing and leisure to home electronics, home renovation and seasonal products and dry foodstuffs.
The new Tokmanni store is in line with the variety discount retailer’s newest store concept, which supports quick and easy shopping. The store has a total area of around 2,650 square metres. In connection with the store, there is also a garden department of around 600 square metres that sells soil, plants, garden furniture and various winter tools, for example, depending on the season.
“Our new Tokmanni store in Kirkonkylä in Nurmijärvi is delightfully modern and pleasant. Its wide aisles, comprehensive signage and well-defined product departments help our customers effortlessly find what they are looking for, as well as other current and necessary products,” says Timo Heimo, Vice President, Sales and Supply Chain at Tokmanni.
“Our customers will appreciate the opportunity to shop in two of the large urban centres in Nurmijärvi – in our new store in Kirkonkylä and in Klaukkala, which is just ten kilometres or a fifteen-minute drive from there.”
The Tokmanni store in Kirkonkylä employs around 18 retail sector professionals under the supervision of Store Manager Susanna Jaanu. The store will be open from 8 am to 9 pm on weekdays, from 8 am to 7 pm on Saturdays and from 10 am to 7 pm on Sundays. Its address is Sairaalantie 3, 01900 Nurmijärvi, Finland.
Convenient services and smart energy choices
In addition to offering a pleasant shopping experience and a comprehensive product selection, Tokmanni has invested in services that make customers’ daily life easier and in smart energy choices.
“The store will have a recycling point for small waste electrical and electronic equipment that will enable our customers to dispose of old toasters, electric razors and other broken small electronic devices safely and appropriately,” Heimo explains.
Like in the other Tokmanni stores, customers can make purchases in the new store as Tokmanni’s corporate customers and members of the Tokmanni Klubi loyal customer programme. Customers can also pick up orders made through the Tokmanni online store and withdraw cash when paying at the checkout.
For years, Tokmanni has only purchased renewable electricity for its locations. In addition, renewable solar energy is being produced by means of solar panels on the roofs of more than 50 Tokmanni stores.
“The Tokmanni store in Kirkonkylä also has its own solar power plant. Its 360 solar panels are expected to produce around 110,000 kW of zero-emission electricity for the store annually. This corresponds to the typical annual electricity consumption of around 55 small apartments*,” says Harri Koponen, Vice President, Store Network and Concept at Tokmanni.
“It is estimated that the solar power plant at the Tokmanni store in Kirkonkylä will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 9,800 kilos, which equals the emissions generated by a car with an internal combustion engine over a distance of around 65,000 kilometres.”
Tokmanni seeks to reduce waste by optimising order volumes and deliveries, for example. Stores in the Tokmanni chain also sell soon-to-expire food products at half-price, starting two hours before the stores’ closing time.
Plenty of special offers and surprise buckets filled with product gifts
The opening of the new store will be celebrated in true Tokmanni style. The Tokmanni store in Kirkonkylä will have plenty of special offers from its opening day until the end of the week, including Tokmanni’s famous surprise buckets filled with various product gifts for the first 1,000 customers. In addition, Tokmanni gift cards (EUR 100) have been hidden in two of the buckets.
At the opening ceremony in the morning on Thursday 25 August 2022, Mayor Outi Mäkelä will give a welcome message on behalf of the municipality of Nurmijärvi. Tokmanni will be represented by Mika Rautiainen, President and CEO, Harri Koponen, Vice President, Store Network and Concept, and Jyrki Jääskeläinen, Regional Manager, in addition to the store personnel.
Tokmanni’s store chain is growing and modernising
Tokmanni has entered into agreements on opening new stores also in Kontula in Helsinki, the Keljo district of Jyväskylä and Söderkulla in Sipoo. In addition to opening new stores, Tokmanni has entered into agreements on expanding its stores in the Komppi shopping centre in Ikaalinen, the Koskikeskus shopping centre in Tampere and Tammisto in Vantaa. Tokmanni has also decided to postpone the planning and construction work of the new store property planned for Suonenjoki to a later date due to the strongly increased construction costs.
Tokmanni aims to expand its store network to more than 220 stores in Finland. A list of the most significant changes to the Tokmanni store network between 2016 and 2022 and of forthcoming changes that have already been announced can be found at ir.tokmanni.fi/en/investors/tokmanni-as-an-investment/new_stores.
* The calculations use 2,000 kWh as the annual electricity consumption of an apartment.
The estimated emissions reduction is based on the estimated annual output of the planned solar power plants. The CO₂ emission coefficient in Finland for average electricity generation has been used in the calculations, based on the average of the emission factors calculated using the benefit-sharing method for three statistical years (2018, 2019 and 2020). The emission coefficient only takes into account domestic energy production (meaning that purchased electricity is excluded) 89 kgCO₂/MWh. The value of the average emissions coefficient was updated on 7 April 2022.
In motoring, the emissions calculation formula is 147.1 kgCO₂ of emissions per 1,000 km (www.openco2.net/fi/co2-converter).
