Reducing climate emissions is one of Tokmanni’s key priorities in corporate responsibility. For example, the company has installed more than 50 solar power plants to produce renewable emission-free electricity on the roofs of its stores around Finland and its administrative and logistics centre in Mäntsälä. Tokmanni has been granted the second-best score (A-) in the international climate change assessment of the CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), an organisation monitoring companies’ climate measures and environmental reporting. Tokmanni’s achievement in reaching the Leadership category shows that the company’s sustainability work related to climate change is at a very good level. In 2021 and 2020, Tokmanni’s CDP score was B (Management category).

Tokmanni’s inclusion (A-) in the Leadership category in the climate change assessment proves that Tokmanni is increasingly considering the risks and opportunities arising from climate change and actively taking measures to reduce emissions, combat climate risks and develop a low-carbon economy.

“Tokmanni takes climate change seriously, and reducing climate emissions is one of our company’s key priorities in corporate responsibility. We are glad that our practical measures to mitigate climate change continue to be reflected in the CDP’s climate change assessment, in which Tokmanni has been granted the second-best score. This is a great result and a proof of our successes and determined long-term work,” says Sirpa Huuskonen, Vice President, People, Culture and Sustainability at Tokmanni.

Established by non-governmental organisations in 2000, the CDP is a global organisation that annually assesses companies’ environmental work, ranking them in scores ranging from A to D-. The scores are based on the scope of reporting, the identification and management of environmental risks and opportunities, and compliance with the best practices in environmental management. On the basis of its approved scores, the CDP divides companies into the following categories: Leadership (A and A-), Management (B and B-), Awareness (C and C-) and Disclosure (D and D-).

Tokmanni is seeking to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by optimising the transport routes of its products and investing in solar energy, for example. The company also encourages its suppliers to set climate targets officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Tokmanni set such targets, which are based on the Paris Agreement, for its own operations in 2020 being as one of the global pioneers in retail that time.

Internationally recognised climate work

Tokmanni actively participates in mitigating climate change and believes that it is very important to assess and reduce the impacts of its operations broadly and reliably. In addition to participating in the CDP’s climate change assessment, Tokmanni reports in line with the TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures) recommendation on how it addresses the risks and opportunities arising from climate change.

In 2020, Tokmanni took a significant step forward in its climate work and joined other global pioneers by adopting ambitious climate targets that are officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). With these targets, which are based on the Paris Agreement, Tokmanni supports the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign and contributes to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius through its own operations.

For the past two years, Tokmanni has, according to its SBTi targets, encouraged its suppliers to set their own climate targets that are officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

In addition, Tokmanni seeks to achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations in 2025.

In 2021 and 2022, Tokmanni’s climate work received recognition from the Financial Times. In the FT’s Europe’s Climate Leaders 2021 and 2022 listings, Tokmanni was ranked as the best retail sector company in Finland and the third best among all Finnish companies in terms of emission reductions relative to revenue growth.

Main focus on the direct climate impacts of Tokmanni’s operations

Tokmanni pays special attention to the direct climate impacts of its own operations. For example, the company invests in renewable energy by installing solar power plants on the roofs of its stores and by purchasing only CO2-free electricity. At the moment, more than 50 Tokmanni locations (more than 25%) have a solar power plant producing emission-free energy.

Tokmanni wants to continue to make smart energy choices that reduce its carbon dioxide emissions.

“In addition to investing in solar power plants that produce emission-free electricity, we will acquire guarantees of origin for renewable electricity and improve our energy efficiency by means of LED lighting, for example. We will also optimise the transport routes of our products,” Huuskonen explains.

“At the same time, we encourage our customers to promote the reuse of materials with the help of recycling points for waste electrical and electronic equipment, for example.”
