Tokmanni has been credited with the third highest score of B given by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) organisation in its latest global climate change assessment. This is an improvement on the score received in the assessment published in January 2020, where Tokmanni achieved the fifth highest rating of C. The considerably higher score shows that Tokmanni has made significant progress in its responsibility work related to climate change.

The fact that Tokmanni achieved the Management level score of B in the climate change assessment shows that Tokmanni has improved the way it takes into account the risks and opportunities of climate change and is actively taking measures to reduce emissions, combat climate risks and develop a low-carbon economy.

“We are very pleased with this recognition for Tokmanni's efforts to curb climate change. It shows that Tokmanni is on the right track when it comes to taking climate change into account in its business operations. The significant improvement in the score compared with the previous year is the result of Tokmanni's determined efforts to develop responsibility and its concrete and consistent improvement measures. We take climate change seriously and reducing climate emissions is one of our most important areas of corporate responsibility,” explains Emilia Koski, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Tokmanni.

The CDP is an independent global organisation that was set up by NGOs in 2000, which annually assesses the environmental work of companies and distributes approved scores ranging from A to D- for the work. The CDP’s scores are based on scope of reporting, identification and management of environmental risks and compliance with the best practices in environmental management. On the basis of its approved scores, the organisation places companies into the following levels: Leadership (A and A-), Management (B and B-), Awareness (C and C-) and Disclosure (D and D-).

Range of solid measures to curb climate change
– Main focus on the direct climate impacts of Tokmanni’s own activities

Tokmanni actively participates in the mitigation of climate change and believes it is very important to assess the impacts of its operations in a broad and reliable manner. In addition to participation in the CDP's climate change assessment, Tokmanni also reports in accordance with the global Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) Reporting Recommendation on how it is prepared for the risks and opportunities arising from climate change.

Earlier this year, Tokmanni took a significant step forward in its climate work and joined other global pioneers by adopting ambitious climate targets that are officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). With these targets, which are based on the Paris Agreement, Tokmanni is supporting the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign and committing to doing its part to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C in its own operations. The commitment is significant, as the 1.5°C target is the most ambitious in the Science Based Targets initiative.

Tokmanni focuses in particular on the direct climate impacts of its own operations. In practice this means, for example, that it invests in renewable energy through installing solar power plants at its stores and purchases renewable electricity. Tokmanni also acquires renewable energy certificates, improves the efficiency of its energy consumption with LED lighting, optimises the logistics routes of its products and offsets the emissions caused by air travel.

“We want to make smart energy choices that reduce our CO2 emissions. For example, solar power plants that produce renewable energy help us reduce emissions at our stores where the emissions from our own operations originate primarily from heating and from electricity for lighting, ventilation and cooling. Prompted by our positive experiences, we have already installed solar power plants at around 40 of our stores and at our HQ and Logistics Centre in Mäntsälä. This means that about one in five Tokmanni stores is already producing its own solar energy,” says Koski.

Tokmanni encourages its customers to do more recycling with the help of, for example, recycling points for electrical and electronic equipment waste. In the future, new Tokmanni stores will also feature, as possible, charging points for electric and rechargeable hybrid cars, for example.

Tokmanni is currently working on defining its carbon neutrality target.
