Tokmanni     Press release     28 April 2022 at 2:30 p.m.

Tokmanni will be supporting Baltic Sea protection again this year. The money raised through the campaign organised by the variety discount retailer and the John Nurminen Foundation will go to the Foundation’s activities to save the Baltic Sea. The campaign will run from May until August, and during the campaign each Pisara product purchased from Tokmanni will add one cent to the donation.

Tokmanni and the John Nurminen Foundation, which focuses on protecting the Baltic Sea and its heritage, are continuing their cooperation that was launched the year before last with a new Pisara – Protecting the Baltic Sea charity campaign. During the campaign, Tokmanni will donate one cent to the Foundation for the protection of the Baltic Sea for each Pisara product bought by its customers in May–August this year. Tokmanni takes the loss of biodiversity seriously and has already donated EUR 133,000 to support the Foundation in its work to protect the Baltic Sea. The John Nurminen Foundation is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

The Baltic Sea is one of the most polluted seas in the world, and its most serious environmental problem is eutrophication. Through their cooperation, Tokmanni and the John Nurminen Foundation aim to raise awareness of the state of the Baltic Sea and the importance of the efforts to protect it, and are offering Tokmanni’s customers a tangible and very easy way to get involved in the protection of the Baltic Sea.

“We are very pleased to be supporting the John Nurminen Foundation, as it carries out important work to protect the Baltic Sea that produces results. The Baltic Sea catchment area also has relevance for a large number of our customers and Tokmanni’s employees,” says Terhi Uusitalo, Project Manager, Sustainability at Tokmanni.

“We have organised similar campaigns twice before and received plenty of praise for them. Encouraged by the positive feedback and in honour of the John Nurminen Foundation’s 30th anniversary, we are very pleased to be carrying out the campaign again. During the campaign, purchasing Pisara products will be an even smarter choice, as this will enable everyone to contribute to the protection of the Baltic Sea,” she continues.

Tokmanni’s donation will support protection work that brings results

The money raised through the cooperation will go to the John Nurminen Foundation’s projects to save the Baltic Sea. The Foundation’s projects work towards improving the status of the Baltic Sea by reducing the nutrient load and the environmental risks it is exposed to and by sharing information on the status of the Baltic Sea. The Foundation’s work is steered by measurable results and impact.

“The donations enable us to ensure the continuity of our operations,” says Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, Managing Director of the John Nurminen Foundation.

“We are grateful for Tokmanni’s valuable and significant support, which is used for activities to save the Baltic Sea that produce results and for raising awareness of the importance of the Baltic Sea,” says Arrakoski-Engardt.

The John Nurminen Foundation’s projects reduce the amount of nutrients ending up in the sea, remove nutrients that are already in the sea, and have an extensive impact on the protection of the Baltic Sea and the decision-making that benefits the Baltic Sea.

“The projects currently in progress involve the improvement of the nutrient balance, the development of the transportation and processing of fertilisers, the reduction of nutrient discharges related to biogas production, the mowing of reedbeds, the production of training material related to the Baltic Sea, and the active participation in social discussions,” says Arrakoski-Engardt.

“It is great that Tokmanni wants to be involved in the work to promote the wellbeing of our common sea,” she says.

Pisara is the perfect choice for the charity campaign again

Pisara, the variety discount retailer’s private label which focuses on beauty and cleansing, plays a key role in the joint charity campaign of Tokmanni and the John Nurminen Foundation. The brand that was launched in 2019 has almost two hundred skin, hair and body care products and other personal hygiene products.

“Pisara offers a very wide range of products that are required in everyday life, from shower and liquid soaps to moisturising creams, sponges and cleansing wipes. Pisara is also very popular, so it is excellently suited to our charity campaign for the protection of the Baltic Sea,” says Mikko Keskitalo, Purchasing Manager, Home and Personal Care at Tokmanni.

Pisara is one of Tokmanni’s numerous private labels. Its assortments comprise almost two hundred different products, including liquid soaps and shower gels, shampoos, foot bath salts, as well as hand, foot and body creams.

Tokmanni takes biodiversity loss seriously

In addition to climate change, the loss of biodiversity has become a significant threat to the environment. Tokmanni’s goal in its own operations and value chain is to take into account factors that will allow it to contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources. Examples of this include the policies on Tokmanni’s key raw materials, i.e. cotton, palm oil, wood and fish.

Tokmanni’s fish policy is based on the WWF seafood guide. In accordance with the fish policy, the origin of the fish in all the fish products in Tokmanni’s selections must always be known. Tokmanni does not sell fish species that are on the red list of the WWF seafood guide and it promotes fish species that are on the green list of the WWF seafood guide in the creation of its product offering.

“In our fish policy, we have committed ourselves, for example, to ensuring that by the end of 2022, the fish in our private label products is caught responsibly. This means that the products will have an MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) or ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) certificate or other reliable documentation stating that they are not on the red list of the WWF seafood guide. For example, at the end of 2021, six out of seven of the tinned tuna products in our Priima private label were MSC certified,” says Uusitalo.

Tokmanni is also a part of the amfori BEPI environmental programme that helps to prevent the risk to biodiversity arising in the supply chain. For example, in amfori BEPI, factories assess their water consumption, their emissions to soil and water and the impact of their land use on biodiversity.

The preservation of biodiversity is also supported by Tokmanni’s ambitious climate targets. Tokmanni has committed to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius in its own operations in accordance with the official climate targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Tokmanni is also aiming to achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations (Scope 1 and 2 emissions) in 2025.

Tokmanni will actively provide information about the Pisara - Protecting the Baltic Sea charity campaign in its stores, advertisements, websites and social media channels.
