Oxfordshire racer heads back to the US to compete in largest indoor Midget car event

The opportunity to race head-to-head against Indycar, NASCAR and the very best short oval racers in the world sees Tom Harris as the sole British driver to head to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in January for the Chili Bowl indoor Midget race car competition. The six-day event starting 9thJanuary, held on an a clay track inside the 39,000m² Tulsa Expo Centre, sees the multiple F1 stock car champion and US Sprint Car racer return for his third visit to the ‘Super Bowl’ of Midget Car racing.

“This year we had a second in the heat and eventually reached the F Main, a major improvement on our debut in 2015,” says Harris. “Experience of racing on this surface is vital to do well and that comes with years of experience. Indoors and out of the sun and wind, it behaves very differently to an outdoor track. With another year under my belt I’m confident we can get much further.”

Harris will race a freshly-built Bob East chassis that is currently nearing completion at East’s Indianapolis workshop. “Bob knows what it takes to build a car for the Chili Bowl,” adds Harris. “We get so little practice time that Bob’s experience is critical in getting the car on the pace from the start. He has been so helpful in my Sprint Car racing I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else.”

Alongside a sporadic campaign in BriSCA F1 in the UK, 2016 saw a breakthrough in Harris’ Sprint Car racing in the US with his first heat win in the category and reaching the ultimate ‘A Main’ twice. “We are getting there, we just need to spend more time out there to build up our consistency but we are definitely causing the home-grown racers a bit more trouble!”

The weekend activity from the Chili Bowl is broadcast live on the RacinBoys channel www.racinboys.com .
