Automotive PR appointed to drive CLOCS road safety initiative

A construction industry-led initiative which aims to protect vulnerable road users has appointed Automotive PR to promote its work to improve road safety to the transport sector and wider industries in the UK.

Launched in 2013, CLOCS (Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety) was set up in partnership with the construction industry in response to an independent review commissioned by Transport for London (TfL). The review studied cyclist fatalities that involved construction vehicles and possible preventative measures.

The specialist PR agency will use its expertise and knowledge of the transport industry to launch and promote the CLOCS initiatives to the media, in order to target those companies working within the construction and logistics supply chains as well as the wider public. The aims are to revolutionise the management of work-related road risk, embed a road safety culture within industry and ultimately improve road safety not only in London but across the UK.

Between 2008 and 2014, 55 per cent of cyclist fatalities in London involved a heavy goods vehicle and nationally large goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes were involved in approximately 15 per cent of cyclist and 10 per cent of pedestrian fatalities. A disproportionate number of these were construction vehicles, sparking TfL’s independent review and the subsequent CLOCS programme.

John Hix, CLOCS Programme Director at AECOM, said: “We are really looking forward to working with Automotive PR. Engaging with the wider construction and logistics industry, especially the smaller operators who may not have heard of the initiative, is a key aim for us and we are confident that working with an agency with in-depth knowledge and experience of the sector will help us meet our targets.”

Marco Ferrari, managing director of Automotive PR said: “We’re extremely pleased to have been appointed by CLOCS. Fatal and serious accidents between large vehicles and vulnerable road users are an ongoing issue both in London and further afield and we are looking forward to working with CLOCS and the wider industry to demonstrate just how much progress is being made. The team is already eager to get to work promoting what is a very worthwhile initiative for the whole of the UK.”
