The celebration of the 10th anniversary of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group – held on September 21 2015 in New York – had a special “China feel” in the atmosphere, with the impending arrival of President Xi Jinping in the United States on an official visit, the recent announcement of the megacities of Guangzhou and Nanjing joining as members of the C40 network – bringing the total membership of Chinese megacities to seven – and the strong presence of Chinese EV giant BYD Company Ltd. as an important global partner of C40 Cities in the areas of renewable energy and zero-emission mass urban transportation. Amongst the high ranking dignitaries in attendance were former US President Bill Clinton – also a founding member of C40 – former Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes, Mayor of Johannesburg Parks Tau, Vice Mayor of London Matthew Pencharz and Vice Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Rodrigo Rosa.

With over 5,000 zero-emission electric buses delivered worldwide and thousands more units ordered and under production, BYD is by far the world’s largest maker of pure electric buses. Its electrified public transportation solutions are currently running in over 150 cities in 37 countries, beating the US and Japan in technology and sales. This means the company stands out as the only automaker to make electrified transportation feasible and affordable to the masses, making an actual difference in the effort to significantly cut carbon emissions from urban transportation. Aiming at furthering its sustainability platform by boosting its proven electrified urban transportation solutions around the world, this year BYD has partnered with C40 Cities as a funding partner for the third edition of the C40 Cities Leadership Awards, which showcases world-leading city policies and programs that reduce emissions and improve sustainability.

BYDs role and contribution to sustainable development in the sector of energy and transportation won effusive praise from all dignitaries present at the event. Former US President Bill Clinton highlighted the extreme importance of the cooperation between governments and the private sector in promoting sustainability, and placed great expectations on BYD – which he was already acquainted with after inspecting and trying the BYD e6 electric crossover in Colombia, along with former Mayor of Bogota Gustavo Petro Urrego – by saying: “We look forward to cooperating with such outstanding enterprises as BYD to promote the development of green energy”. Mr. Michael Bloomberg unreservedly expressed his appreciation and gratitude to C40 and BYD for their invaluable support and contribution to the environmental cause.
