Continental Focuses on Reducing Emissions in Commercial Vehicles

- IAA 2014 Hanover: Continental is globally active in creating new technology aimed
at reducing emissions and fuel consumption – new localized production in China
 and the U.S.

- New products: injection pump for medium duty commercial vehicles, innovative sensors, SCR-injectors, and dosing systems

- Complete integration of the exhaust-gas technology specialist Emitec brings important advantages

Exhaust-gas after treatment is increasingly becoming a key technology in commercial vehicles. In Europe, where the Euro VI standard has been in force since 2014, all new vehicles must have selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to comply with the NOx limits. In China from 2015, commercial vehicles will only be registered if they comply with Euro IV. The international automotive supplier Continental views these decisions as validation of its strategy.

Emitec advances emission reduction in commercial vehicles

- Exhaust gas after-treatment concept for EURO VI: smaller, lightweight, more efficient and less complex

- Product portfolio to support growth and new markets in Asia

- Integration of Emitec into the new Continental business unit Fuel & Exhaust Management (FEM) combines strengths in the product portfolio

At the 65th IAA Commercial Vehicles show Emitec presents new concepts to optimise exhaust gas after-treatment in accordance with the valid Euro VI standard. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) plays a key part in this to meet NOx limits. To minimise emissions, Emitec offers highly efficient catalytic converters based on metal substrates, PM-Metalit particle filters, and SCR dosing systems, all of which are comprehensively proven in many volume applications.

The recent integration of Emitec into Continental Powertrain has formed a joint expertise which ranges from injection and engine control to questions of system configuration to sensors which measure and monitor the exhaust gas quality as well as the oxygen contents in the intake manifold on to the exhaust gas after-treatment components. “This offers the ideal prerequisites for the continued optimisation of emissions and fuel efficiency”, says Dr. Markus Distelhoff, Head of the new Continental Powertrain Business Unit Fuel & Exhaust Management (FEM).

New Additional Function Simplifies Tyre Detection

Continental has added a new feature to its successful ContiPressureCheck™ tyre pressure monitoring system. Automatic Trailer Learning (ATL) can now monitor the condition of tyres on trucks and trailers much more easily and practically. Semitrailer tractors with ATL can automatically and wirelessly detect each trailer tyre equipped with ContiPressureCheck sensors. This means that the tyre pressure monitoring for the trailer matches up with that of the tractor vehicle, even if the semitrailer is frequently changed.
