Cummins brings Tier 4 'Technology that Transforms' to Inter Airport

Low-Emissions engines drive ground support equipment productivity, fuel efficiency and reliability

MUNICH (October 6, 2015) – The opening day of INTER AIRPORT highlighted a strong presence of Cummins engines in equipment meeting low emissions requirements in the 75 to 751 hp (56-560 kW) power category. Significant productivity improvements and fuel-efficiency gains have been achieved by machines with the transition to EU Stage IV (EPA Tier 4 Final) engines, highlighting how Cummins brings ‘Technology That Transforms’ to each application in the ground support industry – not just with ultra-clean power, but with improved response and lower operating costs.

The move to near-zero emissions at EU Stage IV (EPA Tier 4 Final) has been achieved with an additional reduction in fuel consumption to that achieved at Stage IIIB (Tier 4 Interim). Depending on application, Cummins-powered machines are able to realise up to 8 percent improved fuel-efficiency compared with their pre-2011 Stage IIIA (Tier 3) equivalents. With the full potential of Tier 4 technology utilised, even higher savings have been achieved with features such as torque shaping, idle control and eco-operating modes.

Importantly, the advantage of low-emissions engines comes with no compromise to reliability. That has been confirmed by Cummins in-service reports based on a large engine population in operation since the introduction of exhaust aftertreatment.

Analysis of warranty data and service events clearly indicate that Cummins low-emissions engines are delivering availability levels at least equal to that of previous Stage IIIA (Tier 3) engines with a long established reputation for reliability.]

“In-service dependability is a key attribute of Cummins low-emissions technology and our tracking of the Tier 4 engine population is clearly indicating that equipment operators are seeing uptime availability and minimal service intervention equally impressive as what they experience with our mature Tier 3 engines,” said Hugh Foden, Executive Director - Cummins Off-Highway Business.

The ability to transform machine performance is reflected in the theme of the Cummins stand (Hall B6, Stand 742), featuring a 74 hp-to-400 hp (55-298 kW) engine range compliant with Stage IV and Tier 4 Final regulations. The engine line-up includes the 4-cylinder QSF3.8, targeted towards compact ground equipment and the midrange QSB6.7 and QSL9, ideal for aircraft tow tractors, catering and utility vehicles and aircraft fire and rescue equipment. Cummins key enabling technologies are showcased, with complete air intake-to-aftertreatment exhaust-out systems and components.

Cummins feature in a variety of machines at Inter Airport; TLD announced their new aircraft tractor the TMX550, powered by a QSB6.7 Stage IV (Tier 4 Final) engine and rated at 275 hp (205 kW) at the show. Cummins power is shown in the Goldhofer AST-2 P/X towbarless aircraft tractor, using a QSL9 Stage IV (Tier 4 Final) engine rated at 380 hp (283kW).

Newly launched at the event, the Kalmar Motor TBL800 electric and hybrid towbarless aircraft tractor provides an alternative power solution for the industry. The vehicle uses a QSB6.7 Stage IV (Tier 4 Final) engine rated at 260 hp (193 kW) to charge its batteries when it is needed and is the first ever hybrid tractor on the market designed to handle wide body aircraft such as the A380.
