CUMMINS CLEAN EURO 6 ENGINES FEATURE AT UITP
Milan, Italy (June 8, 2015) – Cummins will display its latest Euro 6 clean diesel and natural gas products at UITP (Hall 3A, Stand 146) for passenger transport applications.

The commercial vehicle industry has met the challenging conditions set out by the EU at Euro 6, driven by their increasing focus on real-world vehicle emissions. The considerably lower emissions limits coupled with reduced particle number count have been achieved through a range of engine technologies. The change to world harmonized test cycles at low speed/load conditions means they are more reflective of day-to-day vehicle operation. The cold and hot soak emissions cycles ensures that the levels are met in all conditions. And, the in-service emissions limits ensure the emissions are met through the vehicle’s useful life of up to 7 years.
The EU will continue to assess whether existing Euro 6 in-use measurement provisions are robust through portable emissions testing (PEMS). This involves manufacturers installing sophisticated lab equipment in a selected sample of vehicles to measure the emissions over agreed routes. Results will be studied to ensure the legislated levels continue to be met.
“Real world monitoring has shown that Euro 6 in-use emissions are extremely low, and are key enablers for the air quality improvements targeted by the EU. The challenge now for the passenger transport industry is how to move more of the vehicle fleet over to these clean solutions,” added Barcena.
To meet the ultra-low levels of Euro 6, Cummins engines use proven technologies of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbocharging (VGT). The Cummins VGT is optimised for high torque and low speed capability, delivering significant performance and driveability improvements.
The engines work with the latest Cummins designed exhaust aftertreatment technology, combining a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), a patented design using Copper Zeolite technology for very high conversion efficiency, even at low temperatures.
On display, the 4-cylinder ISB4.5 engine is available up to 210 ps, with the 6-cylinder 6.7 litre ISB engine extending up to 280 ps for buses and 310 ps for coaches. The ISL 8.9 litre diesel is available up to 380 ps. These engines feature in the latest buses from Alexander Dennis, Wrightbus, VDL, Scania, Temsa, Otokar and Anadolu Isuzu.
Also on show is the 8.9 litre ISL G natural gas engine, available from 250 to 320 ps for alternative fuel bus applications. It uses a combination of cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) with stoichiometric combustion, which is so clean it enables the use of a simple, highly efficient three-way catalyst aftertreatment. The maintenance-free, three- way catalyst technology is an effective, passive device, packaged as part of the exhaust muffler, providing consistent emissions control across the operating range. This engine is installed in the Solaris Urbino 12 CNG bus.
