DAF boosts Powerday’s efforts to produce ‘urban vehicle of the future’
- London-based waste specialist takes first Euro-6 DAF LF skip chassis
- New DAF ‘fits vision of urban vehicle of the future’
- Powerday, DAF and Hyva collaboration
Family-owned recycling and waste management specialist, Powerday in Harlesden, has taken on a new Euro-6 DAF LF 250 FA skip-loader chassis. The vehicles comes with a bespoke specification which the company describes as fitting its ‘vision of the urban vehicle of the future’.
Equipment comprises a Hyva skip-loader body operated via new remote control technology, a four-camera ‘live streaming’ monitoring system, and filled-in side-underrun protection; all safety features which Powerday believes may one day be a standard requirement for inner city commercial vehicles. DAF Telematics is also installed.
Boasting truly impressive green credentials and compliant with a wide range of industry standards, including FORS Gold accreditation and CLOCS Champion status, Powerday says that DAF was instrumental in ‘spearheading the next generation of Powerday vehicles’.
“DAF is fully committed to what we want achieve,” said Transport Manager, Bill Cox, “and, together with Hyva, we have brought to fruition a vehicle which is not only Euro-6 compliant, the first on our fleet, but a truck that fits our vision of the urban vehicle of the future.”
Powerday has previous and excellent experience of DAF having taken 15 DAF LF 18-tonne skip vehicles in 2011. The latest Euro-6 LF, while showcasing Powerday’s credentials as one of the Capital’s most environmentally conscious fleet operators, is also being measured against the benchmark performance of its Euro-5 predecessors.
“Our prior DAF experience has been very positive indeed,” said Cox, “and from an operational point-of-view, our drivers appear extremely impressed with how the DAFs handle themselves around town.
“The wireless remote control that operates the skip loading equipment is, we believe, a step forward in the safer loading and unloading of skips,” added Cox, “giving the driver all-round vision of the operation instead of just one view from the side of the vehicle, thus ensuring a far safer proposition for both driver and bystanders.”
Powerday, with its claim of ‘100% recovery from waste 24/7’, boasts the largest and most efficient recycling plant in southern England. From its Old Oak Sidings site in north-west London, the company’s wharf may accommodate three 90ft barges at peak times, each carrying up to 80 tonnes of waste. Located next to Willesden junction, Powerday is able to rail-freight materials throughout the UK – equivalent to 70 truck-loads of material for a single rail-freight journey.
