DAF LF ever-ready for Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service
- 10 new 16-tonne Euro-6 DAF LF 250 FAs replace long-serving Euro 4 DAF fleet
- New DAF chassis with Emergency One bodywork and Ziegler crew-cab conversions
- DAF’s strong presence in the Local Authority sector secures reputation for Lancs F&R
- "…last fleet of LFs were tough, unfailing and very quick off the mark under blue lights," John Hargreaves, Lancs Fire and Rescue
Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service has received the last of a programmed delivery of 10 new DAF LF 250 FA emergency response vehicles at its Training Centre location. The 16-tonne GVW 4x2 rigids are equipped with Co-polymer bodies by Emergency One with four-man crew-cab conversions by Ziegler.
The fleet replaces an ‘unfailing’ Euro 4 DAF fleet which has seen 12 years of front-line service. The Service says it’s sticking with the DAF marque after unwavering in-service operation and as a result of DAF’s significant presence in Local Authority fleets throughout the region.
The trucks are specified with Allison 3000 fully-automatic gearboxes and Parker Chelsea PTOs. DAF Engineers fitted the exhaust units a further 650mm rearward on the chassis while relocating the AdBlue tank to the nearside to accommodate the crew-cab.
“The DAF product is second-to-none,” said Head of Fleet & Engineering Services, John Hargreaves, “we’ve been using them since 1985 and see no reason to change now. Our last fleet of LFs,” he said, “were tough, unfailing and very quick off the mark under blue lights, and it performed flawlessly for 12 years. I’m looking forward to the same performance and longevity from the Euro-6 vehicles.”
He added, “Locally, DAF has a very strong presence, and DAF is a significant feature in Local Authority fleets. That popularity means there’s no risk of brand obsolescence. DAF has excellent credentials in this part of the world,” he said, “underlined by the comprehensive and super-quick back-up from the DAF Dealer, Lancashire DAF at Walton Summit. Indeed, the whole DAF aftersales service is excellent. We have access to DAF engineering experts at DAF Trucks in Thame and at the assembly plant in Leyland, and that’s proved a massive help to our in-house workshop activities.”
Lancashire Fire & Rescue Services visit to DAF Trucks’ and Leyland Trucks’ Building Britain event last year further strengthened the Service’s bond with the DAF brand. “Knowing our DAF vehicles are built just up the road at Leyland Trucks fills us with a sense of pride. We’re delighted to support the local economy and our DAF trucks are a highly visible reminder of that.”
