DAF Transport Efficiency Driver Challenge – so you think you can drive?

DAF Trucks has launched its DAF Transport Efficiency Driver Challenge – a UK-wide search to find Britain’s best commercial vehicle drivers.

Under the rubric ‘so you think you can drive’, and with the DAF Dealer network supporting the search, DAF Trucks has already embarked upon compiling a shortlist of 20 of the country’s best drivers.

The shortlisted 20 drivers will participate in a series of challenging practical and knowledge-based assessments centred around an all-expenses-paid, two-day, live event at the Millbrook testing facility in Bedfordshire in May. The top three winning drivers will be crowned as the DAF Transport Efficiency Champions and invited to participate in a ‘classified’, once-in-a-lifetime driving challenge, taking them across the continent and finishing at the home of DAF Trucks in Eindhoven.

To compete in the challenge, DAF Trucks is expecting drivers to exhibit impeccable levels of:

• Driving style, performance and efficiency across different sizes of truck and driving conditions.

• Road knowledge, legislation and the Highway Code.

• Vehicle knowledge, defect reporting and pre-use checks.

The DAF Transport Efficiency Driver Challenge is being rolled out across the UK and is open to any driver with a clean C+E Licence, a Driver Card and a Driver CPC. To truly maximise the potential of identifying the nation’s elite drivers, the Challenge is open to non-DAF drivers, too. Candidates must apply by visiting www.daf.co.uk/thechallenge where they will also be required to complete some initial questions on truck- and transport-related topics.

You have your license so you can drive, but have you ever wondered just how good you really are?” asks DAF Trucks driver trainer and press truck demo driver, Mandy Wannerton. “Are you confident enough to pit your skills against your peers? If so, here’s your chance. You may be the most fuel efficient driver on your fleet,” she says, “or the most experienced, or even the most technically knowledgeable, but, whether an owner driver or a fleet driver, we’re looking for the whole package – somebody who can do the lot. We’ve devised a full range of tests to identify the best of the best.”

The live two-day event at Millbrook will be overseen by Mandy Wannerton, assisted by a judging panel of industry experts. The top 20 drivers will undergo a series of stringent practical and theoretical tests, while receiving expert leadership from Mandy and her driver training team. Drivers will also have the chance to driver the full range of DAF trucks.
