Dynamic weighbridge investment ensures ECWVTA for tipper builder

  • Investing in its own Axtec dynamic weighbridge helps tipper-body builder Aliweld Limited save time and money to regularly check vehicles meet ECWVTA
  • Axtec drive-over dynamic weighbridge is most accurate of its type in the world (to +0.5 per cent) and checks individual axle and total weight in less than 40 seconds

To ensure all its vehicles meet European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA) regulations, a leading tipper body manufacturer, Aliweld Limited from Newcastle Upon Tyne, has invested in its own Axtec dynamic axle weighbridge. Now it can weigh vehicles before and after conversion, on site in less than 40 seconds, obtaining individual axle and gross weights to a guaranteed accuracy within 0.5 per cent.

Space restrictions at Aliweld’s premises mean the small footprint of just over two square metres for the Axtec 5000 dynamic weighbridge, compared to around 45 square metres for a conventional weighbridge, made the installation much more practical, and was completed by Axtec, including all civil engineering work and full on-site calibration using its unique test vehicle.

As it is fitted flush with the ground it is unobtrusive and vehicles can still move freely across the ‘run-up’ area, or even over the plate itself. Being able to weigh every vehicle on-site saves Aliweld valuable time and money as it no longer has to travel to other weighbridges in the area.

Aliweld can now be 100 per cent confident to produce the ‘Certificate of Conformity’, a key part of Whole Vehicle Type Approval standard, which a vehicle cannot be registered without. The data gathered can also be used as part of a continuous product improvement process and to identify opportunities for further weight savings.

Toby Welch, one of the directors at Aliweld commented: “Having our own weighbridge saves us time and money, and we believe it will pay for itself in about 15 months. We have to weigh each vehicle twice, so once we had hired a driver, fuelled the vehicle and completed two trips to our local weighbridge, the costs were adding up. Better still, we have a print out of a vehicle’s weights for our records and the VCA.”

Keith Gresham, Managing Director, Axtec (Axle Weight Technology Ltd) commented: “I am delighted that our axle weighbridge will help Aliweld to continue to improve its products by providing the accurate data it needs, and help to conform to ECWVTA legislation.”

“Aliweld has an excellent and well-deserved reputation for the quality of its products and the efficiency of its manufacturing operations, so as the UK’s axle weighing technology specialist, with the most accurate products in the world, we are delighted it chose Axtec to supply and install this weighbridge,” Keith continued.
