  • „  Technology will champion further driverless car innovations

A new driver assistance system pioneered by Bosch could reduce collisions with pedestrians in cities by up to 58 percent, due to new technology which allows the car to predict a collision before it takes place, stopping the car or helping the driver avoid it.

The system uses a camera to capture information about the vehicle’s environment, which is analysed ten times a second. If it detects that a pedestrian has stepped into the road and a collision is imminent, it will attempt to stop the car or if this isn’t possible will help the driver to take evasive action at speeds of more than 30mph.

Bosch has also developed a system to reduce driver distraction, which is a key contributor to accidents. Cameras mounted in the vehicle’s interior can tell whether a driver’s eyes are on the road and if they are not, the car can alert the driver with a light on the dashboard.

The insights gained in developing this new technology will also assist Bosch with its development of fully automated vehicles or driverless cars. From 2020 it is expected that vehicles featuring Bosch technology will be capable of highly automated driving on motorways without the need for constant driver supervision.

Bosch’s latest innovation is the product of its work within the UR:BAN project, a publically funded project, which brings together 31 partners from the automotive, automotive-supply, electronics, communications and software industries as well as universities, research institutes and cities. The project aims to develop driver assistance and traffic management systems for cities and receives €40 million funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
