An engineering apprentice at Stadco Castle Bromwich, Andrew Batsford, has been awarded First Year Apprentice of the Year by Midland Group Training Services (MGTS). This award recognises attitude and an individual’s contribution to both their own learning and that of others.

Andrew is studying for a BTEC National Diploma in Engineering, a programme which covers electrical, welding, mechanical maintenance, ‘fitting and assembly’ and hydraulics. Apprentices also learn important personal development skills, such as communication and personal discipline.

Stadco, the leading international supplier of body-in-white products and services to the automotive industry, has got a strong apprenticeship programme and is taking on eight new engineering apprentices this year, bringing the total number of engineering apprentices within the business up to 22. The new apprentices will spend the first year of their programme at EEF, ‘The manufacturers’ organisation’, where they will participate in the government’s Trailblazer scheme, to learn the skills they need to immediately contribute to the plant’s successful running when they join one of the Stadco sites in their second year.

As well as a commitment to developing skills in the industry, Stadco uses apprenticeships as an established recruitment tool. Apprentices who are approaching the end of their programmes with Stadco are being offered permanent positions at the company’s Telford plant.

Aaron Singh of MGTS said, “Andrew has been quick to learn the essential skills required for him to achieve the highest standards in all skill areas and has demonstrated a clear ambition and self motivation, striving for excellence in all tasks.  It is the opinion of all the Centre training staff that Andrew has set himself apart in the best possible way.”

Chris Fisher, Managing Director of Stadco, said: “On behalf of the whole company I’d like to congratulate Andrew on his achievement. His commitment to the apprenticeship programme has been impressive and he has a bright future ahead of him in the engineering industry. We look forward to welcoming him into the Stadco team soon.

“Apprenticeships are a brilliant way of ensuring our engineers have both the right skills for the job and the ability to apply them. Our apprenticeship scheme is continuing to grow and we encourage anybody interested in a position to get in touch.”
