Forklift transport specialist, Robert Walker Haulage, has switched acquisition policy with the delivery of two new Euro-6 DAF XF 460 FTG Super Space Cabs. The vehicles, supplied by F&G Commercials (Manchester) are the first new DAFs for the Stockport-based haulier after previous experience with ten used DAFs on 57, 09 and 59 plates. The new DAFs enter a fleet of 35 tractors and 50 low-loader and semi-low-loader trailers.

The company reports exceptional reliability from its existing DAF vehicles, matched only by the aftersales support from the DAF brand through F&G Commercials.

“Great support from DAF every time,” said Transport Manager, John Chapman, “F&G Commercials are great. We have our own workshops and the service personnel at F&G bend over backwards to support us. We had an engine go down on one of the older DAFs,” he said, “and F&G were right there to give us all the technical assistance we needed.”

With vehicles acquired previously under leasing contracts, Walkers has also switched to outright purchase with its new XFs, choosing three-year Lease Purchase arrangements through PACCAR Financial. “We looked carefully at the cost of leasing,” said Chapman, “and it was three-quarters of the price of outright purchase. Through PACCAR Financial, we were able to fund the vehicles and benefit from a two year DAF MultiSupport Repair & Maintenance contract and a third year driveline warranty.”

Primarily forklift, plant and access-platform transport specialists, Walkers reports that fuel figures over 7.0mpg are ‘par for the course’. “We’re confident that, when they’re bedded in, the new Euro-6 XFs will turn in over 8.0mpg,” continued Chapman, “We use heavy, specialist trailers, often with the roof retracted, and this has an adverse effect on economy – 7.0mpg is par for the course. Even empty, we run at over 20 tonnes,” he said, “so eight-plus will be a significant boost to productivity.

“Our two dedicated drivers are very happy indeed with their Super Space Cabs.” he added.

While Robert Walker (Haulage) has developed into the UK’s largest independent transporters of mechanical handling equipment, the company, established in 1935, can lay claim to transporting Donald Campbell’s famous Bluebird car and Bluebird boat to their respective attempts at the land and water speed records.
