Statement on the end of MACCIH’s mandate in Honduras
Transparency International regrets that the government of the Republic of Honduras and the Organization of American States (OAS) have not prolonged the agreement allowing the Support Mission against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (MACCIH) to continue to operate.
Transparency International and its national chapter in Honduras, the Association for a More Just Society (ASJ), have supported MACCIH, an international body of anti-corruption experts, since it was created in 2016. The organisations have collaborated with MACCIH to ensure that technical assistance provided to Honduran institutions was effective.
We expect the State of Honduras to make a firm commitment to formulate and implement public policies that prevent and combat illicit acts by organized crime gangs and corrupt networks. Honduras must also create an enabling environment in which civil society organizations can fully enjoy their right to carry out social auditing, citizen oversight, and thus help in the fight against corruption and impunity.
