Pioneering energy-saving company provides smarter stocking filler for families this Christmas

London, 2 July 2012 – Smart home and cleantech pioneer, TreeGreen, has been invited by John Lewis to participate in its prestigious Christmas press show. Taking place at Victoria House in London on 4-5 July 2012, John Lewis’ high-profile event showcases the best of fashion, beauty, electrical items and home and giftware, and attracts more than 300 journalists from the consumer and trade press. TreeGreen will be demonstrating its flagship energy-saving product, the energyEGG®, on the afternoon of July 4.

With family households running more appliances and gadgets than ever before, many devices are left switched on or in standby, resulting in wasted power and higher utility bills. The energyEGG takes this problem out of the consumer’s hands by automatically switching off connected appliances at the mains when a room is unoccupied. Providing a practical solution for families looking to control power-hungry appliances and gadgets in the most energy efficient way, the energyEGG is closely aligned with the concept of the ‘smart home’. This is a concept fast becoming a reality with the government-backed rollout of smart meters in every UK home and business by 2020.

“John Lewis is always keen to promote products that help its customers achieve a more environmentally-friendly home,” says Yat Wong Jones, Small Electricals Buyer, John Lewis. “We are pleased to be including the energyEgg at our Christmas Press Show this year.”

The energyEGG starter pack has a recommended retail price of £40.00 and consists of one ‘egg’, which incorporates a smart occupancy sensor, as well as a socket that acts as a control adapter. The sensor uses TreeGreen’s patent-pending ‘SitStill’ technology to differentiate between a room that is empty and one with motionless occupants, ensuring that nothing is switched off while still in use. The egg communicates via wireless signal with the control adapter, which has a 3000w rating, allowing the user to connect a power strip to it. Using a simple dial on the bottom of the energyEGG, the user can determine a pre-set time of between five and 30 minutes for the sensor to cut power to the connected appliances when it detects the room is no longer in use. TreeGreen is now poised to launch a lighting switch for use in conjunction with the energyEGG.

“Our vision is to continue to deliver smart products that do not force us to change our lifestyle, but still save us money, reduce our energy wastage and make our homes a little bit safer in the process,” says Brian O’Reilly, managing director, TreeGreen. “This will mean no more panics because the iron has been left on and an end to the late night trawls for appliances that have been left on, as well as peace of mind that forgetfulness has not been a factor in excessive energy bills. John Lewis’ prestigious Christmas press show provides the perfect opportunity for us to demonstrate the power of our motion sensor technology to key members of the media and show why the energyEGG makes a smarter stocking filler for families this Christmas.”

Notes to Editors

TreeGreen recommends the energyEGG for use in the room with the most appliances as this is the one where users can save the most money. Consumers can use TreeGreen’s Energy Saving Calculator to work out how much they can save.

Based in Glasgow, TreeGreen was founded by Brian O’Reilly in 2007. Formerly a software engineer working for Oracle, Brian was inspired to create the energyEGG after being driven to distraction by his three young daughters continually leaving on games consoles, TVs and stereos when they had finished using them.

Working with Strathclyde University as a research partner, TreeGreen has taken the energyEGG from concept to commercial product, securing public sector funding from Scottish Enterprise, as well as investment from the private sector in order to expand its R&D activities and push the product out into the high street. The energyEGG was launched online in April 2011 and into John Lewis’ high-street stores in April 2012. Discussions are on-going with a number of other major retailers.
