To support National Apprenticeship Week, Trend Control Systems is highlighting the opportunities that its Attitude Apprenticeship Scheme offers to those seeking an exciting and challenging career in the building controls industry.

Trend is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of BEMS. With a worldwide distribution and support network covering over 50 countries, its products and systems are increasingly in demand by organisations seeking greater visibility and control of their energy use. Its BEMS engineers are responsible for the design, specification, installation and maintenance of control systems within buildings, ensuring that facilities such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and lighting are fully optimised.

There is growing requirement for properly trained and qualified individuals to carry out this work, and Trend’s Attitude Apprenticeship Scheme addresses this need.

The Attitude Apprenticeship Scheme combines classroom based learning with ‘on the job’ experience and since its launch in 2007 Trend has successfully helped 53 people become fully qualified Level 3 BEMS controls engineers, with a further 47 currently in training. During the four year vocational course, an apprentice participates in a structured educational programme that delivers the only nationally recognised award for those wishing to embark on a career in BEMS design, installation and commissioning – the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing BEMS.

26 year old Tomas Healy completed the Attitude Apprenticeship Scheme in 2012 and is now enjoying a successful career as a Level 2 Technical Support Specialist. Asked what attracted him to the industry, he replied, ‘I wanted the opportunity to work with new technology, be part of a growing industry and have positive career prospects. The building controls industry ticked all of these boxes and more and, with increasing emphasis being placed on energy efficiency, the demand for BEMS is growing at an incredible rate, so I’m confident that I have a secure career.’

Describing his experience as an apprentice, Healy commented, ‘I had a terrific time and would highly recommend it to anyone who is self-motivated, likes a challenge and wants to work in the type of job where no two days are the same. I learned a huge amount and would like to thank Trend for giving me the opportunity to obtain a qualification that has genuine relevance to my chosen career.’
