50 MSEK in large Australian order for five Opcon Powerbox

Opcon, the Swedish energy and environmental technology Group has won its largest Opcon Powerbox order to date, an order of five additional Opcon Powerbox to Australia for delivery 2009/2010. The order value is above 50 MSEK. The customer is Opcon’s partner CoGen ORC Power Australia (“CoGen”)/Enerji Ltd. That brings CoGen/Enerji’s orders to date to a total of six Opcon Powerboxes for delivery within a year.

CoGen, that has been given exclusive distribution rights in Australia initially focuses on a 2.3 million square kilometre area, roughly five times the size of Sweden, covering the Kimberly, Pilbara, Gasgoyne, Mid West and Southern Goldfields regions that are off the South Western Interconnected Grid (Western Australia). The target market consist of mines and remote regional centres/communities, the majority being supplied by on-site, fossil fuel electricity generation systems where fuel only costs for electricity production amounts to 32 cents AUD/kWh / 1,80 SEK/kWh. Further, CoGen targets gas pipeline compressor pump stations, aluminium smelters, cement producers and other process industries with large amounts of waste heat all over Australia. ”We have more than 600 mining companies in Australia and over 350 major operating mines, with most of them off the grid, using their own costly power generation facilities. On the average mine site there is room for one or two Opcon Powerboxes. At large Iron Ore operations with 40 MW generation capacity or greater, more thorough studies have found that there is room for up to 14 Opcon Powerbox units. At the same time we have an extensive gas pipeline network in Australia where tremendous amounts of waste heat is lost at each pumping station. A single pumping station could have enough waste heat available for 14 Opcon Powerboxes. That says a lot about what economic and environmental potentials that we are looking at here”, says Ross Smith, Managing Director of CoGen. “With its large distances and high electricity prices, Australia makes a very attractive market for Opcon Powerbox and our technology for carbon-free electricity production. The Opcon Powerbox is a product developed by Opcon for the production of new carbon-free electricity from waste heat at temperatures as low as 55°C. A standard Opcon Powerbox is at 0,74 MW and can be installed in large process-industry plants, power stations or with adaption, onboard larger ships. By utilizing waste heat, electricity is produced from a source that would otherwise go to waste.
