Opcon: Saxlund wins Waste-to-Energy order in Stuttgart

Saxlund International GmbH, a fully-owned subsidiary of Opcon AB, the energy and environmental technology Group, has won a high profile, 15 m SEK order from the City of Stuttgart for delivering handling equipment for the expansion of the Waste-to-Energy solution at the waste water treatment plant Stuttgart Mühlhausen.

The order is for a turn-key expansion that will allow Stuttgart’s waste water treatment plant to increase its capacity to take care of sewage sludge from other waste water treatment plants in the vicinity. The sludge will be dried and used as biofuel for the production of renewable heat and power, replacing fossil fuels in Stuttgart’s energy mix.

-       Saxlund is happy to be part of this development where we turn Waste to Value. Apart from increasing the use of renewable energy and decreasing our carbon foot-print, the incineration of sludge in these very modern waste incineration plants, significantly lowers the emissions of heavy metals like led, cadmium and mercury, says Christoph Groffmann, Managing Director of Saxlund International GmbH.

At the heart of the delivery is Saxlund’s Solids Pump designed especially for sewage sludge and a major benefit in the efficient, low-maintenance and environmentally beneficial offer of Saxlund. The order comes at the same time as Saxlund last week finished a similar delivery to Germany’s largest waste water plant, the Hamburg Köhlbrandhöft.

-       Since the passing of the German law prohibiting the use of sludge in landfill some six years back Germany has spearheaded the development of Waste-to-Energy solutions in this field. With 20 years of experience in this field and high profile references such as Stuttgart and Hamburg, Saxlund is established as a technology leader within this area, says Rolf Hasselström, CEO Opcon AB.

Saxlund International GmbH is part of Opcon’s Waste to Value initiative with a special focus on Waste Heat Recovery and bioenergy. Within the bioenergy sector, Opcon offers everything from the design of complete combined heat and power (CHP) plants to handling systems and incineration plants under the Saxlund brand.

Under the SRE Renergi brand, systems are supplied for cleaning and improved energy efficiency for bioenergy-powered district heating plants, sawmills, pellets producers and commercial greenhouses. The offer also includes flue gas condensation equipment for industrial activities as well as drying systems for biomass. The Opcon Group also supplies Opcon Powerbox for production of green electricity produced from hot water or wet steam.
